Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique has offered a rare glimpse into his future plans, revealing when he intends to retire from management. The Spanish tactician, who has enjoyed a highly successful tenure in the French capital, is reportedly close to finalising a new long-term deal with the club.

Enrique outlines his retirement vision

Despite his consistent success at the elite level of European football, Enrique has admitted that he does not see himself coaching well into his later years. The former Barcelona and Spain coach, now 56, has set a precise endpoint for his managerial career, explaining that he wishes to avoid becoming what he jokingly calls a “grandfather” on the sidelines.

“I don’t want to be a grandfather who coaches. I don’t want to be that. I think that beyond 60… In fact, I tease my brother Felipe by telling him: ‘I’m going to have to retire before you.’ He is a year younger than me, he is 55, and he will retire at 61… so do the math,” Enrique told La Nueva Espana. This timeline suggests that he plans to step away from football management in 2030, which conveniently aligns with the end of his upcoming contract extension.

PSG ready to secure long-term future with Enrique

His comments about retirement arrive as Paris Saint-Germain prepare to tie him down for the long term. Reports indicate that Enrique is on the verge of signing a contract extension that will keep him at the Parc des Princes until June 2030. Since taking charge, he has reshaped the team’s philosophy, steering it away from dependence on individual star players and towards a unified, tactical collective approach.

The club’s upper management is reportedly thrilled with his achievements, especially after he led PSG to three successive Ligue 1 titles and their first-ever UEFA Champions League triumph during the 2024-25 season. Should he remain until 2030, Enrique would become the longest-serving coach under the Qatari Sports Investments (QSI) ownership, delivering the stability that the club has long sought.

Transforming the team’s mentality

Enrique’s greatest influence has arguably been in the dressing room, where his focus on teamwork and shared responsibility has completely changed the squad’s mentality. This cultural shift has been fundamental to PSG’s recent success, replacing the club’s old image of vulnerability in high-pressure European fixtures with a sense of unity and resilience.

Right-back Achraf Hakimi recently praised the manager for this transformation, saying: “He has changed everything at PSG, everyone has changed their mentality: now we are a team, we play for each other, we run for each other, we are a family.”

This bond within the squad has been crucial as PSG prepare for another major European final, demonstrating how deeply Enrique’s philosophy has resonated with his players.

Focus turns to Arsenal clash

For now, Enrique’s attention is fixed on the upcoming Champions League final against Arsenal in Budapest. Reflecting on the magnitude of the occasion, the Spaniard noted that while the burden of expectation was immense during last year’s victory over Inter, his team is now more composed and better prepared to manage the occasion.

“I think last year there was more pressure. The fact of never having won it for the club and for the fans represented a lot. It was positive pressure... but it could drown you. The bear hug that kills you (laughs). This year we feel better. If we play football under too much pressure, we are not going to play football,” he said. With a contract renewal imminent, Enrique seems ready to guide PSG into a new era of sustained success before eventually stepping away from the game.
