The inclusion of striker Ivan Toney in England’s World Cup squad has come as a surprise, even to manager Thomas Tuchel himself.

Tuchel revealed that the decision to call up Toney was unexpected, acknowledging that it took many by surprise, including the England management staff.

Since taking over as manager, Tuchel has only selected Toney once, when the forward came on as an 88th-minute substitute during last June’s friendly loss to Senegal.

It was widely assumed that Toney’s international opportunity had passed, but he has been chosen ahead of players such as Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Jarrod Bowen, and Danny Welbeck.

Playing away from much of the European spotlight, Toney has been in excellent form for Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, where he has scored an impressive 41 goals and provided 11 assists this season.

When asked about his decision to include Toney, Tuchel said, “It was a pleasant surprise for us as well.”

He continued, “I received outstanding feedback from his club coach, who happens to be a former player of mine, and I share a good relationship with him. The reports about Toney’s performances, fitness, and overall contribution have been consistently positive. His numbers speak for themselves.”

Tuchel further explained, “He possesses some unique qualities that could be crucial for us, particularly in situations where we are chasing a result or in need of a goal.”

“I believe he can perfectly complement Harry Kane. His presence inside the box is significant — he draws defenders, creates space for others, and is a natural finisher. His aerial ability and physical strength make him a real threat during set pieces. And let’s not forget, he’s one of the best penalty takers in the world.”
