Barcelona’s young midfield sensation Marc Bernal has credited manager Hansi Flick for playing a crucial role in his progress, especially after a long injury layoff. The 18-year-old revealed that he has chosen not to plan a summer break as he waits for possible news of being included in Spain’s senior national squad.
Rising star eyes World Cup opportunity
Bernal had an impressive breakout season with Barcelona, making 21 La Liga appearances and contributing to three goals after recovering from a serious cruciate ligament injury. The teenager regained his starting position in February following Frenkie de Jong’s injury absence and now hopes to benefit from Fermin Lopez’s misfortune, after the midfielder was ruled out of the forthcoming World Cup due to a broken leg. Speaking to Catalunya Radio, the Berga-born player said he remains hopeful of being part of Luis de la Fuente’s upcoming squad announcement.
Bernal shares his international ambition
Reflecting on his swift adaptation under Flick and his decision to delay vacation plans until Monday’s official announcement, Bernal said: “Of course, I’d love to go. Representing your country is the ultimate dream for any footballer, and I haven’t given up hope yet. Right now, I’m not scheduling anything for the summer – I just have to wait and see.”
The young midfielder also expressed deep appreciation for Flick, who gave him his senior debut at 17 and carefully supervised his recovery process. Bernal added: “I owe him my life. He believed in me when I was just 17, and I’ll always be thankful for that.”
Barcelona prepare for Lewandowski’s farewell
As Barcelona brace for Robert Lewandowski’s likely departure in the upcoming transfer window, Bernal took a moment to acknowledge the Polish striker’s contribution to the club’s recent domestic success. Speaking about Lewandowski’s legacy, Bernal said: “He has done so much for Barça, helping us win titles again. He’s a legend, and we’ll always be grateful for what he’s given to the team.”
Looking ahead to his own goals after Barcelona’s narrow Champions League quarter-final exit to Atletico Madrid, Bernal commented: “To keep winning trophies – that’s what gives you the best feeling. We’re satisfied with what we’ve done. The Champions League slipped away from us due to small details in a very tough tie, but next season we’re aiming even higher.”
Spain’s World Cup journey on the horizon
The talented defensive midfielder faces a decisive moment on Monday as Spain finalises its World Cup squad. If selected, Bernal will get the chance to contribute to La Roja’s pursuit of a second world title after their 2010 victory. Spain will open their Group H campaign against Cape Verde on June 15, followed by matches against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay.
