Manchester United supporters have been advised not to “celebrate” Pep Guardiola’s impending departure from their city rivals, with Patrice Evra describing the news as “sad” for everyone who loves English football. It has been officially confirmed that the legendary coach will leave the Etihad Stadium this summer, a revelation that has been warmly welcomed by many at Old Trafford.
Guardiola’s exit comes after an extraordinary spell at Manchester City, during which he led the club to 20 major trophies. Over his 10-year tenure, the Catalan tactician has dominated English football, guiding City to six Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph, leaving Manchester United to play catch-up.
During the same period, United have managed to secure only five trophies, as the club continues its pursuit of domestic supremacy at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’. However, the mood seems to be shifting once again.
Michael Carrick has brought renewed optimism to Old Trafford, and many believe the Red Devils could re-emerge as genuine title contenders by the 2026-27 season. Guardiola, however, will no longer be in the opposite dugout to challenge them in that pursuit.
The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss will step down from his demanding role at the end of the current season, following fresh Carabao Cup and FA Cup victories. Reports suggest he plans to take a sabbatical, with speculation linking him to Cristiano Ronaldo’s Saudi Pro League champions, Al-Nassr.
Evra has expressed his disappointment at Guardiola’s departure, even as many United fans rejoice. The ex-United full-back, who won both the Premier League and Champions League during his time at the club, told GOAL in association with Stake: “I’m sad. I’m sad because he’s a manager I respect deeply for everything he’s brought to the game. I bid him farewell.”
He continued, “Why should I be happy? The structure of a club is stronger than any player or manager. So guys, don’t celebrate. Don’t celebrate too early. I honestly don’t see City collapsing.”
“I’m sad because we are losing one of the great managers. I don’t know if he will stay in the Premier League or not. But I’m sad that football is losing Pep Guardiola.”
Explaining his decision to leave, Guardiola issued an emotional statement on Manchester City’s official website confirming that the rumours of his exit were true. He said, “What an incredible journey we’ve had together. Don’t ask me why I’m leaving — there’s no specific reason. Deep down, I just know it’s time. Nothing lasts forever, but the feelings, people, memories, and love I have for Manchester City will always remain.”
He added, “This city is built on hard work — you can see it in the bricks, in the people who put in long hours in factories, in the unions, the music scene, and the Industrial Revolution that shaped the world. My players and I came to understand that spirit. We worked hard, we suffered, we fought, and we did things our own way.”
“Thank you for trusting me, for challenging me, and for loving me. It’s been unbelievably enjoyable. Love you all.”
With Guardiola stepping down, both Manchester clubs are now preparing for new managerial eras. At City, former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca — who previously served as Guardiola’s assistant — is tipped to succeed him at the Etihad, facing the daunting task of continuing the club’s success.
Meanwhile, at Old Trafford, interim boss Michael Carrick has earned a permanent role after steering United towards Champions League qualification. The club’s hierarchy has rewarded him with a full-time contract, a strong transfer budget, and the backing to mount a serious Premier League title challenge in the coming seasons.
