Manchester United’s midfield revamp is steadily taking shape, with the club now edging closer to securing West Ham United’s young prospect, Mateus Fernandes.
In the last 24 hours, major progress has been reported regarding Ederson’s potential move, with sources indicating that Manchester United and Atalanta have reached a verbal agreement for the Brazilian midfielder’s transfer.
However, the 26-year-old Ederson is unlikely to be the final addition to United’s midfield. The club could require up to three new signings in that area, particularly if Manuel Ugarte joins Casemiro in departing Old Trafford this summer.
Mateus Fernandes’ name has gained significant traction recently, with reports suggesting that Manchester United are prepared to invest £70 million in the Portuguese youngster.
After spending last season on loan at Southampton, the 21-year-old now faces the prospect of back-to-back relegations, as West Ham fight to avoid the drop on the final day of the Premier League campaign.
Despite this, the Sporting CP academy graduate is widely expected to remain in the top flight next season, having proven himself capable of performing at elite level clubs.
According to Carrington insider Sully, who shared updates on RoundTable, Fernandes has made Manchester United his top priority despite attracting interest from several other European clubs.
The report adds that Michael Carrick, who now enjoys greater influence over transfer decisions than Ruben Amorim, is a strong supporter of the move. The 44-year-old manager is said to ‘absolutely love’ the young midfielder’s playing style and versatility.
Sully further notes that agreeing to personal terms with the player should not pose any difficulty. However, Manchester United will need to negotiate a deal with West Ham, who are expected to demand a substantial fee after signing Fernandes for £38 million last summer.
In addition to Carrick’s backing, Fernandes also enjoys the full support of his compatriot and inspiration, Bruno Fernandes, who is keen to see the youngster join him at Old Trafford.
Capable of operating in multiple midfield roles, the Portuguese international combines excellent technical ability with physical strength and a relentless work ethic on the pitch.
While Elliot Anderson remains a dream target for many Manchester United fans, Nottingham Forest’s £120 million valuation, coupled with strong competition from Manchester City, makes that deal unlikely.
Still, the prospective arrivals of Ederson and Mateus Fernandes could significantly strengthen United’s midfield, especially with Kobbie Mainoo having impressed during the latter half of the season.
Although one more signing might be required to complete the overhaul, securing both the Brazilian and Portuguese midfielders would mark a strong beginning to the INEOS era at Manchester United.
