In old times, people used to keep their homes cool even without AC and cooler. With the help of indigenous and natural methods, the temperature of the house can be reduced to a great extent. The special thing is that these measures also save electricity and keep the house cool naturally.

put thick curtains on the windows
During summer, the room gets heated quickly due to direct sunlight coming inside the house. In such a situation, it is beneficial to put thick and light colored curtains on windows and doors. Keeping the curtains closed during the day keeps the room temperature low.

keep the roof of the house cool
The roof of the house is the hottest. Sprinkling water on the terrace helps in reducing the temperature. Apart from this, applying white paint or layer of mud also reduces the heat. Even today in villages, people keep their houses cool by putting grass or sackcloth on the roof.

use an earthen pot
Drinking water from an earthen pitcher instead of the refrigerator gives natural coolness to the body. Also, keeping earthen utensils in the room keeps the atmosphere slightly cool. This method is considered beneficial for health along with saving electricity.

open windows at night
It is better to keep the windows closed during the day because of the hot air, but at night the windows should be opened to let in the cool air. This brings fresh air into the room and makes one feel less hot.

Plants will increase coolness
Planting plants in the balcony, terrace or courtyard of the house keeps the environment cool. Plants like basil, aloe vera and money plant help in reducing the heat in the house. Plants also purify the air.

Use cotton clothes and bedsheets
In summer, cotton clothes and cotton sheets should be used instead of synthetic ones. Due to this, coolness is felt in both the body and the room. Light colored clothes absorb less heat.

run less electronics
TVs, computers and other electronic devices also produce heat. These should be kept closed when not needed. Especially during the day, running low power appliances keeps the room temperature low.
