Alejandro Garnacho marked his first goal for Chelsea in style, celebrating with his signature Manchester United pose after scoring against Sunderland on Saturday. The Argentine winger, who made a permanent switch from United to the Blues in the last transfer window, found the net for the first time in his new colours after seven appearances. His celebration also paid tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo, his long-time idol.
Garnacho showcases Man Utd-style celebration
Garnacho was named in Chelsea’s starting eleven for the third consecutive Premier League match as he continued to settle into life at Stamford Bridge. In the fourth minute, Enzo Fernandez won possession in his own half and quickly released Pedro Neto, who threaded a precise through ball towards Garnacho sprinting down the left wing.
The young forward carried the ball into the Sunderland penalty area, skillfully skipped past a defender, and slotted home from a tight angle with a composed finish. Following the goal, Garnacho and Neto climbed onto the advertising boards to celebrate together—a gesture reminiscent of his famous 2024 celebration while still at Manchester United, where he was joined by teammates Kobbie Mainoo and Rasmus Hojlund.
Garnacho channels Ronaldo’s influence
Before making his way to the touchline and perching on the advertising board, Garnacho pointed to the ground—a move frequently associated with Cristiano Ronaldo’s iconic celebrations. The 19-year-old has long expressed his admiration for the Portuguese legend, now playing for Al-Nassr, and even shared the pitch with him briefly during the 2022-23 season at Old Trafford. His latest celebration was another clear nod to his football hero.
Why Garnacho parted ways with Manchester United
Garnacho’s exit from Manchester United came after being placed in coach Ruben Amorim’s so-called ‘bomb squad’ during the summer. Following a breakdown in their relationship last season, the Argentine became determined to seek a new challenge. Chelsea secured his services for £40 million ($54 million) ahead of the new campaign, though he had struggled to make a significant impact until his goal against Sunderland.
Reflecting on his time at Old Trafford, Garnacho recently told TNT Sports, “I’ve got nothing bad to say about my old club Manchester United, just bad moments in life. I’m very happy to be here now, play in this competition and get three points today.”
Chelsea’s chase for victory
Although Garnacho’s early strike gave Chelsea the lead, Sunderland quickly equalised within 18 minutes through Wilson Isidor. Manager Enzo Maresca will now need to adjust his tactics and adopt a more attacking strategy in the second half to secure an important win.
Following the home encounter against Sunderland, Chelsea are set to face Wolves in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, before a crucial Premier League showdown with Tottenham Hotspur on November 1.
