Arsenal’s pursuit of a major transfer target seemed to be losing momentum, but the club is now reportedly preparing an ‘aggressive’ bid to secure the player.
The North London side are determined not to rest on their achievements as they near the conclusion of what has been their most remarkable season in decades.
After sealing their first Premier League title in 22 years last week, the Gunners have now turned their attention towards clinching a maiden UEFA Champions League trophy, with a final clash against Paris Saint-Germain set for Saturday in Budapest.
However, planning for the future is already underway, as Arsenal aim to solidify their dominance both in England and across Europe.
The Gunners are reportedly keen to extend manager Mikel Arteta’s contract beyond its current expiry next summer, as the Spaniard continues to play a central role in the club’s resurgence.
In addition, Arsenal have been linked with several high-profile targets, including Newcastle United’s midfielder Sandro Tonali and Atletico Madrid’s forward Julian Alvarez. Earlier reports this month indicated, however, that Alvarez appeared more inclined towards a move to PSG.
Despite that, Arsenal have not abandoned their pursuit of the Argentina international, with TEAMtalk reporting that the club is ready to make an ‘aggressive’ approach for Alvarez.
The 26-year-old joined Atletico Madrid from Manchester City two years ago but is believed to be eager for a new challenge this summer. Barcelona have also shown interest in securing his services.
However, financial difficulties at the Catalan club could prevent them from meeting the required fee, as Alvarez is expected to command a transfer price exceeding £100 million.
According to TEAMtalk, both Arsenal and PSG are prepared to meet Atletico’s valuation. Arsenal are said to be proposing a player-plus-cash offer for the 2022 World Cup-winning striker.
This proposal has reportedly strengthened Arsenal’s position, with Alvarez open to joining either of the Champions League finalists and eager to finalise his next move swiftly. The urgency is heightened by Argentina’s upcoming 2026 World Cup opener against Algeria, which is just three weeks away.
Sources close to Alvarez have maintained that message for months — potential bidders must either act decisively or step aside.
Since his arrival at Atletico, Alvarez has become a vital part of Diego Simeone’s team, netting 49 goals in 106 appearances across all competitions.
The forward is now eyeing another strong World Cup campaign, having scored four goals to help Argentina clinch the 2022 title when he was only 22 years old.
