With most domestic seasons having concluded, attention now turns to the highly anticipated UEFA Champions League final this weekend, where Paris Saint-Germain will face Arsenal.
While this year’s UCL final is being held in Budapest, Barcelona are setting their sights on bringing the prestigious event to their own ground, Camp Nou, in 2029.
Barcelona’s aspiration to stage the 2029 Champions League final at Camp Nou received a significant boost today following official backing from the Spanish government.
According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, the Spanish government has formally endorsed Barcelona’s proposal to host the 2029 Champions League final at Camp Nou.
The Council of Ministers, acting on the recommendation of Education and Sport Minister Milagros Tolon and following a request from the Royal Spanish Football Federation, has approved Barça’s bid.
In the same decision, the government also expressed its support for Bilbao’s proposal to host the 2028 Women’s Champions League final at San Mames Stadium.
The government cited the sporting, economic, tourism, and social benefits of hosting major international events as the primary reasons behind their approval.
Barcelona’s newly renovated Camp Nou is expected to be fully completed and ready to host such a grand occasion by 2029.
The Catalan club’s bid also gains momentum from the fact that Madrid’s Metropolitano Stadium is already scheduled to host the Champions League final for the 2026-27 season, giving Spain a recent example of hosting the event successfully.
For Barcelona, securing the 2029 final would be a fitting opportunity to unveil the redesigned Spotify Camp Nou to a global audience, aligning perfectly with club president Joan Laporta’s vision since his return to office.
