
Lucknow26 May. The Uttar Pradesh government has changed the date of public holiday of Eid-ul-Azha (Bakrid). Instead of the previously announced Wednesday, May 27, Bakrid will now be a public holiday in the entire state on Thursday, May 28.
According to the release issued by the General Administration Section on Tuesday, in the holiday list of the year 2026, Bakrid holiday was fixed on May 27, but the date was changeable depending on the sighting of the moon. Since the festival of Bakrid will now be celebrated on May 28 in the state, the government has amended the date of the holiday.
In this order issued by Principal Secretary SVS Ranga Rao, it has been said that serial number 12 of the holiday list declared in the notification number 671/three-2025-39(2)/2016 dated 17 November 2025 should be considered as amended. Now on Thursday, May 28, all government offices, schools, colleges and banks will remain closed.
This order has come into effect with immediate effect. Its copy has been sent to all Additional Chief Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, Additional Chief Secretary to the Governor, Chief Minister’s Office, High Court Prayagraj, Accountant General, all Divisional Commissioners, District Magistrates, Legislative Assembly, Legislative Council, Finance and Home Ministry of Government of India, 16 major departments including RBI Kanpur and Lucknow.
It is noteworthy that earlier in the meeting held on May 24, Chief Minister Yogi had given instructions to take special precautions in view of Bakrid festival. He had clearly said that sacrifice of animals will not be allowed in public places on the occasion of Bakrid. There will be a complete ban on sacrifice of banned animals.
The Chief Minister has directed that Namaz should be offered only at traditional places and Namaz should not be allowed under any circumstances by blocking roads. He said that a well-planned arrangement for waste disposal after sacrifice should be ensured in every district.
