New Delhi: Even this year, there is confusion about the dates among the common people regarding Eid-ul-Azha i.e. Bakrid, one of the most sacred and biggest festivals of Islam. There is a strong discussion in social media and various sources whether this festival will be celebrated on 27th May or 28th May.

Dates in different countries

According to the Islamic calendar, all festivals depend on the sighting of the moon, due to which the dates change in different countries according to geographical conditions. If there is confusion about the exact date of Bakrid in India, then the major moon committees of the country have confirmed that this festival will be celebrated on 28th May.

Difference between dates of Gulf countries and India

In most of the Gulf countries including Saudi Arabia, Eid-ul-Adha is being celebrated today i.e. on 27th May due to the first sighting of the moon. Whereas in the Indian subcontinent, due to the moon being visible a day later, Bakrid will be celebrated here on 28th May. This festival brings the message of sacrifice, patience and mutual brotherhood for Muslims all over the world.

What is Bakrid called?

Bakrid is called ‘Eid of Sacrifice’ and this festival is celebrated in the memory of Prophet Hazrat Ibrahim’s unwavering faith in God, his supreme sacrifice and unconditional dedication. The importance of this festival is not limited only to religious rituals, but it teaches every person to remain contented with the pleasure of Allah, do charity and understand their responsibilities towards the society.

Three main features are seen during this festival:

special namaz

On the day of Bakrid, in the morning, people of Muslim community gather in Eidgahs and major mosques wearing new clothes and offer special namaz.

sacrificial ritual

After the namaz, the halal animal is sacrificed as per the prescribed Islamic rules. Its main objective is to provide food and help to the poor and needy people of the society.

mutual harmony and feasts

After prayers and sacrifice, people go to the homes of their relatives, friends and neighbors to wish them Happy Eid and special dishes are prepared at home.

This festival coincides with the last days of the holy Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. At this time, the spirit of charity and philanthropy is at its peak among Muslims all over the world and all sections of the society celebrate together, forgetting the difference between rich and poor.
