Former Chelsea and Brazil international Filipe Luis is in advanced discussions to take over as Bayer Leverkusen’s new manager at the BayArena. The 40-year-old has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Kasper Hjulmand after a disappointing Bundesliga campaign for the German club.

Leverkusen initiate talks with Filipe Luis

Bayer Leverkusen have begun formal discussions with Luis as they aim to begin a new chapter. As reported by Sky Sport, the former Atletico Madrid defender is the preferred choice of the club’s top management, even though Die Werkself have prepared a shortlist of alternative candidates in case negotiations fall through.

The club is currently finalising the departure of Kasper Hjulmand, who has been unable to meet expectations since succeeding Erik ten Hag. The Dutchman had vacated his position after the second matchday of the previous season. Although Hjulmand’s contract runs until 2027, Leverkusen’s hierarchy is ready to confirm his exit once a new coach is appointed.

Rapid rise in coaching career

Filipe Luis retired from professional football at the start of 2024 after a distinguished playing career that included 333 appearances for Atletico Madrid and 44 caps for Brazil. His move into management has been swift — he took charge of Brazilian powerhouse Flamengo in September 2024.

In his short stint with Flamengo, the former full-back displayed impressive tactical awareness, guiding the team to both the domestic league title and the prestigious Copa Libertadores trophy. Although he was relieved of his duties in March, his reputation remains strong across Europe thanks to his success in South America.

Leverkusen’s struggle for Champions League qualification

Bayer Leverkusen’s search for a new manager follows a frustrating Bundesliga season in which the team fell short of securing Champions League qualification. Despite competing closely with sides like Stuttgart, Leverkusen finished sixth, ensuring Europa League football for next season instead.

Discontent grew within both the squad and the board in the final weeks of the campaign, with many highlighting inconsistent tactical approaches as a major issue. The potential appointment of Filipe Luis would mark a new strategic direction as the club aims to reclaim its place among Europe’s elite.

European pedigree and decorated playing career

Filipe Luis brings vast experience from his successful years in European football with Atletico Madrid and Chelsea. During his time with Los Rojiblancos, he won the La Liga title, Copa del Rey, two Europa League trophies, and three UEFA Super Cups, while also reaching the Champions League final twice. His spell in England was equally fruitful, where he lifted both the Premier League and the League Cup with Chelsea.
