New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani has lauded Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta for his decisive and strategic leadership that guided the Gunners to Premier League success. Mamdani recalled a major decision by Arteta that he initially disagreed with but later acknowledged as crucial to Arsenal’s triumph.
Mamdani applauds Arteta’s leadership approach
Zohran Mamdani, the Arsenal-supporting mayor of New York City, drew comparisons between his own political leadership and Arteta’s management philosophy. Arteta took on his first managerial role at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium at the age of 38, while Mamdani became mayor at 34. Despite differences in their communication styles, Mamdani emphasised their shared recognition of making tough, sometimes unpopular decisions to drive progress in their respective roles.
NYC Mayor admits he opposed Ramsdale’s dropping
Reflecting on the goalkeeping decision that reshaped Arsenal’s defensive setup, Mamdani admitted that Arteta’s mentality impressed him deeply. Speaking to GQ Magazine, he said: “One of the things I think about with Arteta is that I was initially sceptical — I was even opposed — to the idea of moving [Aaron] Ramsdale out as our starting keeper.
“I loved Ramsdale. Many fans did. He was a fan favourite, he was talented, and the ruthlessness required to sign [David] Raya and then hand him the starting spot when there wasn’t a crisis — to me, that marks someone who isn’t content with just competing but is determined to win. I’ve thought about it a lot. If your ambition is to go beyond, then this is the kind of decision you need to make.”
Calculated risk pays off handsomely
The change between the posts began early in the 2023–24 season when Arteta promoted new recruit David Raya ahead of Ramsdale, who was later sold to Southampton for £25 million in August 2024. The move sparked debate among English football followers, with some believing Ramsdale was the safer option compared to Raya’s technically polished but occasionally risky style.
Despite the controversy, Arteta’s decision proved entirely justified. Raya went on to record 19 Premier League clean sheets, equalling David Seaman’s long-standing club record. Anchored by this defensive solidity, Arsenal ended their 22-year wait to lift a 14th top-flight title, finishing seven points ahead of second-placed Manchester City.
Champions League final on the horizon
Now 44, Arteta has become the second-youngest manager to win the Premier League, behind Jose Mourinho. The Basque coach must swiftly turn his team’s attention towards Europe’s biggest stage as Arsenal prepare to face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final this Saturday. Overcoming this massive continental challenge will decide whether the new English champions can complete a historic domestic and European double.
