Barcelona are preparing to step up their efforts to sign Julian Alvarez, with Hansi Flick eager to assemble a powerful attacking unit for the 2026-27 campaign. The Argentine striker is reportedly determined to make the switch from Atletico Madrid to the Spotify Camp Nou, having dismissed interest from both Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain.

Flick calls for attacking reinforcements at Camp Nou

Hansi Flick remains firm in his mission to restore Barcelona to the summit of European football. After sealing the signing of English winger Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United in a €70 million deal plus add-ons, the German coach has made it clear that the squad requires further attacking depth. Flick has prioritised bolstering the frontline, considering it critical for Barcelona’s ambitions to mount a serious challenge for the UEFA Champions League title next season.

Replacing a proven goalscorer like the departing veteran Robert Lewandowski will take a strategic approach, and Barcelona are accordingly targeting another marquee addition. According to a report by Marca, Julian Alvarez has emerged as the top candidate to spearhead a dynamic strike partnership capable of competing at the highest level across all competitions.

Julian Alvarez pushing for Atletico Madrid exit

Despite Atletico Madrid’s reluctance to let him go, Alvarez’s strong desire to don the Blaugrana colours is working to Barcelona’s advantage. The Argentine forward enjoyed a successful season, scoring 20 goals in 49 appearances, but he is now looking for a new challenge under Flick’s management.

Although Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain have both shown interest in securing the World Cup winner’s signature, Alvarez is reportedly focused solely on joining Barcelona. This stance has placed pressure on Atletico’s sporting director, Mateu Alemany, to consider a high-value transfer that would meet the club’s financial targets.

Atletico Madrid demand record-breaking fee

The Rojiblancos are unwilling to part ways with their star striker for anything less than top value. Reports indicate that Atletico’s board at the Metropolitano Stadium will reject any bid below €150 million, highlighting the challenge of replacing a forward of Alvarez’s calibre in the current transfer market.

However, there could be flexibility in negotiations if Barcelona agree to include top-level players as part of the exchange. With the summer transfer window drawing closer, the transfer negotiations between Barca’s sporting director Deco and Alemany are expected to heat up, while Alvarez patiently awaits his long-desired move to Catalonia.

Financial manoeuvres and compliance with La Liga’s 1:1 rule

Barcelona’s financial situation remains under close observation, but club officials maintain that their accounts are gradually stabilising. The management is confident of regaining compliance with La Liga’s 1:1 spending rule before the June 30 deadline. Additional revenue sources, such as the revaluation of VIP boxes at the Spotify Camp Nou and higher matchday income due to increased stadium capacity, are contributing to this effort.

The sale of high-earning players and strategic commercial deals are expected to create the financial leeway necessary to complete both the Anthony Gordon and Julian Alvarez transfers. Deco has been personally leading the negotiations, holding multiple meetings with agents to ensure that the overall financial package for Alvarez remains within the stringent limits set by La Liga.
