Paris Saint-Germain are aiming for consecutive glory, while Arsenal are seeking to join the exclusive list of clubs that have achieved the coveted league and Champions League double.

This Saturday’s Champions League final comes with one certainty: whichever team triumphs will add the prestigious European trophy to their domestic league title, completing an impressive double.

Over the 70-year history of the European Cup and its successor, the Champions League, only 17 clubs have managed to secure both their national league championship and Europe’s top club prize in the same season.

Some clubs have achieved the feat more than once. Here’s the comprehensive list of those who have done it before, with Arsenal looking to join and PSG hoping to repeat the success.

Benfica (1961)

Celtic (1967)*

Hamburger SV (1983)

Steaua Bucharest (1986)

PSV Eindhoven (1988*)

Red Star Belgrade (1991)

AC Milan (1994)

Porto (2004)

Manchester City (2023*)

Paris Saint-Germain (2025*) *as part of a treble

Being part of this elite group of double winners is a remarkable accomplishment. Celtic, notably, were the first European club to complete a treble back in the 1966/67 season.

The two most recent additions to this list—Manchester City in 2023 and PSG two years later—both achieved the treble as well.

If Arsenal can overcome PSG, they will become only the fourth English club to achieve both the domestic and European double.

Inter Milan (1965, 2010*)

Liverpool (1977, 1984)

Manchester United (1999*, 2008)

For 22 years, Liverpool held the distinction of being the only English team to complete this particular double—and they managed it twice. Manchester United joined them with their famous treble in 1999 under Sir Alex Ferguson and repeated the double nine years later.

Inter Milan experienced the longest gap between two such successes—45 years separated Helenio Herrera’s legendary ‘Grande Inter’ from José Mourinho’s treble-winning side in 2010.

Ajax (1972*, 1973, 1995)

Ajax deserve a special mention, being one of only two clubs to win the double in consecutive years—something PSG could soon emulate. Those triumphs came in 1972 and 1973 under Johan Cruyff, with the first of them being a treble. Later, Louis van Gaal’s 1994/95 Ajax side went unbeaten in both the Eredivisie and the Champions League—the only club ever to do so.

Bayern Munich (1974, 2001, 2013*, 2020*)

Unsurprisingly, Bayern Munich are both the first and most recent German club to achieve the feat. It’s an accomplishment that fits perfectly with the Bavarians’ reputation for dominance—take that as a compliment, Bayern supporters.

Real Madrid (1957, 1958, 2017, 2022, 2024)

Barcelona (1992, 2006, 2009*, 2011, 2015*)

The rarity of this achievement is evident in Real Madrid’s record. Despite being 15-time European champions, they have completed the double only five times. However, Barcelona’s incredible spell between 2006 and 2015 stands out even more, with two doubles and two trebles during that period. Remarkably, every one of Barcelona’s European Cup victories has come alongside a league title.

Real Madrid, though, have closed the gap quickly. Once trailing 5-2 behind Barcelona in this honour as of 2015, they have since drawn level by adding three more doubles in the past decade.
