Liverpool reportedly ended Ibrahima Konate contract talks over baffling reason

Liverpool are said to have abruptly ended contract discussions with Ibrahima Konate for what appears to be a rather surprising reason.

The French defender will not be renewing his stay at Anfield. His current contract expires this summer, and with no new agreement reached, Konate is set to depart the club on a free transfer.

The development has come as a shock to many. Konate had previously expressed optimism towards the end of the season that he was close to signing a new deal with Liverpool. However, no progress was made, and negotiations have now concluded without success.

According to reports from The Times, Liverpool decided not to meet Konate’s demands as the club believes the funds should be reallocated elsewhere.

It is understood that Liverpool intend to preserve their budget to address other pressing needs, particularly finding a replacement for Mohamed Salah and temporary cover during Hugo Ekitike’s injury absence. Yet, even though there has been no indication that Ekitike’s situation affected Konate’s talks, the logic behind this decision remains puzzling.

With Konate leaving, Liverpool now face a shortage in central defence. Youngster Jeremy Jacquet, who has yet to make his Premier League debut, is expected to fill the gap—despite recently returning from shoulder surgery.

This situation leaves the Reds short of experienced options, especially as Joe Gomez is also anticipated to depart. Should that happen, the club would be left with a 35-year-old Virgil van Dijk, Jacquet, and teenager Giovanni Leoni—who is recovering from a serious knee injury—as their only available centre-backs.

Given these circumstances, signing a new first-choice defender seems essential. However, doing so would require paying a transfer fee, which could end up costing more than simply extending Konate’s contract. It raises the question of whether Liverpool plan to forgo a direct replacement and instead invest the funds in areas where they had already spent £300 million in 2025.

Clearly, something doesn’t quite add up in the club’s approach.

Anfield Departure Confirmed

As of 29 May 2026, Ibrahima Konate’s exit from Liverpool has been officially confirmed. The 27-year-old will leave as a free agent once his contract expires at the end of June. This comes despite his public comments in April suggesting that an extension was close. Negotiations between his representatives and sporting director Richard Hughes reportedly broke down over wage terms. Konate, who joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig for £35 million in 2021, departs after five seasons during which he won a Premier League title. His final appearance came in the 1–1 draw against Brentford, where he played the entire match.

Future Destinations

Konate’s availability on a free transfer has drawn attention from several top European clubs. Sources indicate that the defender is leaning towards a move to La Liga, although a return to Paris with Paris Saint-Germain is also a strong possibility. Additionally, he has been included in Didier Deschamps’ France squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
