Sindhu and Lakshya make it to quarter-finals of Singapore Open, Prannoy out

Indian players have created a stir in the Singapore Open Super 750 badminton tournament. PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen have made it to the quarter-finals of women’s and men’s singles. Whereas Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty and Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto have entered the last-8 of doubles and mixed doubles. Whereas HS Prannoy, who defeated world number-5, is out.

 

Sindhu defeated Japan’s Riko Gunji 21-9, 21-12 in 37 minutes on Thursday (May 28). Now she will face top seed Ahn Se Young of Korea. Sindhu has never been able to defeat Olympic champion Young and has been defeated by her eight times. The last defeat was in the 2025 China Open.

 

Japanese challenge in front of goal

Star shuttler Lakshya Sen was facing second seed Kunlavut Viditasarn. Viditsaran decided to retire due to back problems after just 2 points, giving the target an entry into the quarter-finals. Now 2021 World Championship bronze medalist Lakshya will face Koki Watanabe of Japan.

 

In men’s doubles, fourth seeds Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated Li Zhi Hui and Yang Po Suan of Chinese Taipei 21-15, 11-21, 21-18 in a tough match and made it to the last eight in an hour-long match. Now they will face Khai Shing Kang and Aaron Tai of Malaysia.

 

 

In mixed doubles, Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto also reached the last eight, defeating Japan’s Yuta Watanabe and Maya Taguchi 8-21, 21-17, 21-16. They will now face the winner of the match between Korea’s Kim Jae Hyeon Jang and Ha Jeong and Malaysia’s Chen Tang Jiye and Toh Ee Wei. Prannoy fell badly in the last game and lost to home favorite Loh Kean Yu 18-21, 21-16, 15-21 in a match that lasted 61 minutes.
