Rafa Benitez appears to be eyeing a return to management, this time on the international stage. The former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss has put himself forward as a candidate for the Italy head coach position, as the Azzurri prepare for a significant rebuild following their latest World Cup disappointment.

The Spanish strategist, currently without a club, has openly discussed his willingness to take charge of Italy’s national team. His remarks come at a time when the four-time world champions are facing a period of uncertainty and reflection after another failure to qualify for football’s biggest tournament.

The leadership vacuum in the Italian setup

While the footballing world’s attention turns to the World Cup hosted by Mexico, Canada, and the United States, Italy once again find themselves watching from the sidelines. Their failure to qualify has already triggered major changes, including the departure of head coach Gennaro Gattuso. The national setup is now awaiting fresh direction, with federal elections scheduled for June 22 to decide whether Giovanni Malago or Giancarlo Abete will replace Gabriele Gravina as FIGC president, following his resignation in the aftermath of the national team’s collapse.

Until a new president takes office, a permanent successor to Gattuso cannot be officially appointed. In the meantime, Under-21 coach Silvio Baldini has been asked to guide the senior side for friendly fixtures against Luxembourg and Greece. Behind the scenes, however, discussions are well underway to identify a high-profile manager capable of reigniting Italy’s footballing identity.

Conte and Mancini remain in contention

Among the names being considered are Roberto Mancini, now managing Al Sadd, and Antonio Conte, who recently ended his stint with Napoli. Yet, a new contender has unexpectedly entered the race. Rafa Benitez, a seasoned coach with strong connections to Italian football, has expressed his readiness to help the Azzurri reclaim their former stature on the global stage.

Speaking to Sky Sport during the UEFA Champions League final between Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain, the former Inter Milan and Napoli manager did not hold back his enthusiasm. Having recently parted ways with Panathinaikos, Benitez is free and eager to return to top-level management in international football.

Benitez makes his intentions clear

When questioned about the possibility of leading Italy, Benitez was refreshingly direct. He admitted his growing connection to the country where he has already enjoyed success. “I am learning and improving my Italian. On a serious note, managing a national team in the future is definitely an option for me. Preparing for a World Cup or a European Championship is a truly fascinating challenge,” Benitez said.

The veteran manager also addressed speculation linking him with the Italy job, leaving no room for doubt. “Me, coach of the Italian national team? I would do it with great pleasure,” he affirmed, clearly signalling his interest to the FIGC leadership.

Benitez’s candidacy is strengthened by his deep understanding of Italian football. During his spells with Inter Milan and Napoli, he lifted the FIFA Club World Cup, the Coppa Italia, and two Supercoppa Italiana titles. His tactical expertise and composure in high-pressure situations could provide exactly the stability and direction that a disheartened Italian squad needs to overcome their recent struggles.

Meanwhile, Antonio Conte is also reportedly keen on returning as Italy’s head coach following the upcoming FIGC elections, hoping to build on his impressive previous record of 14 wins in 24 matches with the national team.
