Liverpool have officially announced the departure of their head coach, Arne Slot.

Slot took charge at Anfield in 2024, succeeding Jürgen Klopp, and led the Reds to their 20th Premier League title in his debut season in charge.

However, the team struggled to maintain their dominance in the following campaign, suffering 20 defeats across all competitions. Despite their poor form, Liverpool managed to secure a Champions League qualification spot, courtesy of the expanded five-place format.

As Slot approached the final year of his existing contract, club owners Fenway Sports Group decided to end his tenure at the helm.

“That this was a difficult decision for us to make as a club goes without saying,” read an official club statement.

“From the moment we first met Arne, it was evident that he is someone who doesn’t just accept responsibility but fully embraces it.

“This was clear when he agreed to take on the head coach role, when he guided us to the Premier League title, and throughout the recently concluded season as he faced numerous challenges and pressures.”

“At the same time, we have collectively decided that a change is necessary for the club to continue progressing.

“Once again, it must be emphasised that this decision was not taken lightly, far from it.

“Arne leaves with our gratitude, a Premier League title to his name, and the assurance that he and his family will always be warmly welcomed back at Anfield.”

Andoni Iraola has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Slot. The Spanish coach recently parted ways with Bournemouth and has previously worked alongside Liverpool’s sporting director, Richard Hughes.
