Portugal’s captain Cristiano Ronaldo is set to lead the group of veteran players at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Lamine Yamal are among the standout players representing the extreme ends of the age spectrum at the 2026 World Cup.
The Portuguese skipper is gearing up for his sixth World Cup appearance, a remarkable feat in his illustrious career.
When the tournament kicks off, Ronaldo will be 41 years and 126 days old.
However, that age still doesn’t make him the oldest player listed for the 2026 World Cup squads.
The Real Madrid legend ranks second behind Scotland’s veteran goalkeeper Craig Gordon, who is 43 years old.
That means Ronaldo holds the distinction of being the oldest outfield (non-goalkeeper) player in the tournament.
This is an impressive record considering Ronaldo’s position still demands high mobility and sharp goal-scoring instincts up front.
Right behind Ronaldo are five other players who have crossed the 40-year mark.
This group of 40-year-olds includes Guillermo Ochoa, Luka Modric, Edin Dzeko, Manuel Neuer, and Vozinha, with only a few months separating their ages.
Among them, only Modric and Dzeko are outfield players, while the rest are goalkeepers.
The “four-decade club” will soon welcome another member during the tournament — Uruguay’s goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, who turns 40 on June 16.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Spain’s Lamine Yamal leads the pack of young talents ready to challenge their senior counterparts at the 2026 World Cup.
The prodigious winger, currently 18, will celebrate his 19th birthday on July 13, just a day before the first semifinal match.
The age gap between Yamal and Ronaldo is so vast that Yamal is closer in age to Cristiano Ronaldo Jr., the Portuguese star’s son, with only a three-year difference.
Lamine Yamal will represent Spain at the 2026 World Cup as one of the nation’s most promising stars.
The Mexican Wonderkid
However, like Ronaldo, Yamal is not the record holder in his age category.
The title of the youngest player at the 2026 World Cup belongs to Mexico’s midfielder Gilberto Mora.
The teenage sensation, born on October 14, 2008, is 17 years and 8 months old. Despite his young age, he already has substantial experience.
Mora has earned seven senior caps for Mexico and has featured in over 50 club matches for Tijuana in the past two seasons.
Germany’s rising star Lennart Karl, who plays for Bayern Munich, ranks third among the youngest players in the tournament.
He is 18 years old, just four months older than Czech Republic’s Hugo Sochurek, who is the second youngest.
Interestingly, Lamine Yamal doesn’t even make it into the top ten youngest players list at this World Cup.
Looking at the bigger picture, the record for the oldest player in World Cup history still belongs to Egypt’s Essam El Hadary, who was 45 when he appeared in the 2018 tournament, breaking the previous record held by Faryd Mondragon (43 years) from the earlier edition.
Meanwhile, the record for the youngest player in World Cup history is still held by Manchester United legend Norman Whiteside, who represented Northern Ireland at the 1982 World Cup at just 17 years and 41 days old — a milestone that even Mora cannot surpass.
