Switzerland’s World Cup build-up has been thrown into disarray after star forward Breel Embolo was unexpectedly prevented from travelling to the United States due to a visa complication. The Rennes striker was forced to stay back while Murat Yakin’s squad departed for their training camp in San Diego.

Embolo’s travel blocked by visa complications

The Swiss national team suffered a major disruption on Tuesday morning when it emerged that Breel Embolo’s ESTA authorisation — the automated clearance process for international travellers entering the US — had been placed under administrative review. The decision stunned the Swiss camp since the 29-year-old is regarded as an essential part of their attacking line as preparations continue for the 2026 World Cup finals.

In an official communication, the Swiss Football Association detailed the sequence of events, stating: "Unfortunately, Breel Embolo is currently unable to travel to the United States with the team. His ESTA authorisation had been approved until this morning. However, at 10:30am, we were informed that his ESTA application had been placed under further review."

Background behind Embolo’s visa trouble

The renewed scrutiny of Embolo’s travel eligibility appears to be linked to a legal case from several years ago. The Rennes forward had been involved in an altercation in Basel in 2018, which concluded with a Swiss court ruling in 2023. He was found guilty of issuing multiple threats and received a suspended fine as a result of the incident.

Although Embolo had previously travelled to the United States without any difficulty for friendly fixtures against Mexico and the US in June 2025, his recent decision not to appeal the 2023 verdict rendered the judgment final. This finalised legal status is believed to have triggered concern within the US immigration system, leading to the current impasse just days before the global tournament begins.

Swiss federation hopeful of quick resolution

Despite the complication, the Swiss Football Association remains optimistic that their key striker will soon rejoin the team. Officials are reportedly in active discussions with US authorities to resolve the administrative issue and enable Embolo to take part in what would be his third World Cup appearance.

"We are currently in contact with the relevant authorities and expect that Breel will either join the team later today or travel tomorrow and join the squad then," the federation said in its official statement. The team also showed support through its social media channels, sharing a photo from the team plane with the caption: "One seat empty, but not for long. See you soon Breel Embolo."

Important weeks ahead for Switzerland

Switzerland are set to kick off their group stage campaign on June 13 against Qatar in Santa Clara. They will then face Bosnia and Herzegovina in Inglewood and co-hosts Canada in Vancouver. With every practice session crucial at this stage, Embolo — who has scored 23 goals in 85 international appearances — remains central to Yakin’s tactical setup for these crucial fixtures.
