Indian women’s under-18 hockey team defeated Singapore 25-0 to top Group A and ensure their place in the semi-finals of the Asia Cup.
In the match held on Tuesday, 10 different players scored goals for the Indian team. Nausheen Naz scored the maximum seven goals (8′, 13′, 17′, 18′, 40′, 52′, 58′). Geethasree Nammi, who was adjudged ‘Player of the Match’, scored five goals (13′, 28′, 47′, 48′, 60′), while captain Sweety Kujur scored four goals (2′, 24′, 38′, 45′).
Priyanka Minj also scored a hat-trick (22′, 37′, 53′), while Dia (27′), Nancy Saroha (36′), Shruti Kumari (40′), Pushpa Manjhi (47′), Rashmeen Kaur (47′), and Sandeepa Kumari (51′) scored one goal each.
The Indian team had expressed its intentions at the very beginning of the match with its aggressive play. Captain Sweety scored in the second minute. Then Nausheen increased the lead in the eighth minute. Both Geeta Shree and Nausheen established India’s dominance in the match by scoring goals in the 13th minute.
In the second quarter, the Indian team further increased its dominance, with Nausheen scoring two quick goals. Priyanka and Sweety then helped India increase the lead before halftime. The scoring of goals continued even after the break. Diya and Geetashree scored early in the third quarter, with Nancy, Priyanka, Sweety, Nausheen and Shruti all scoring as India breached the Singapore defence.
India scored ten goals in the last quarter. This is one of the best performances by the Indian team at the Under-18 level. India won against Malaysia, Korea and Singapore, and topped Pool A with an unbeaten record and 9 points. The Indian team has made it to the semi-finals.
