Tribunlampung.co.id, Bandar Lampung – The excitement of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which has spread all the way to Indonesia, was immediately electrified by a daring decision from the German national football team.

Under the leadership of head coach Julian Nagelsmann, the team known as “Der Panzer” has chosen not to play it safe in their quest to reclaim the world’s most prestigious football trophy.

When Nagelsmann announced his 26-man squad for the grand tournament, he reignited optimism among German supporters.

The most talked-about and controversial decision was his choice to recall legendary goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to once again guard Germany’s goal as the team’s first-choice keeper.

The decision to rely on Neuer, who has now entered his forties, came as a surprise to the football world. Neuer had officially retired from international duty following Euro 2024.

However, for Nagelsmann, the charismatic Bayern Munich goalkeeper is more than just a player on the pitch. He sees Neuer as an essential piece in his defensive structure and a lucky charm that Germany needs now more than ever.

This bold move has also inspired Lampung’s Deputy Governor, Jihan Nurlela, who confidently tipped “Der Panzer” as a strong contender for the 2026 World Cup title.

Speaking in a lighthearted chat with Tribunlampung.co.id on Tuesday (2 June 2026), Jihan admitted that she does not follow football too closely on a daily basis.

Nevertheless, the World Cup spirit has made her pick a favourite team to cheer for.

“I don’t really follow the World Cup, but my support goes to Germany,” Jihan said with her trademark smile.

The European giants are scheduled to kick off their campaign in Group E of the 2026 World Cup against Curaçao on 15 June 2026 in Houston, United States. Alongside Curaçao, Germany will face tough competition from Ecuador and Ivory Coast in the battle for a place in the knockout stage.

Unwavering Trust in Neuer

According to Tribunnews.com, Nagelsmann’s trust in Neuer is absolute and non-negotiable. Even other top goalkeepers like Oliver Baumann and Alexander Nubel were forced to accept backup roles on the bench.

“Everyone knows the extraordinary aura and quality that Manu (Neuer) brings, and how much he contributes to the team,” Nagelsmann told Al Jazeera.

“He makes a huge impact on his teammates, instils fear in opponents, and always delivers special moments.”

Despite bringing a veteran back into the squad, Nagelsmann has demonstrated skill in maintaining harmony among his players. His high optimism serves as a strong response to doubts that had surrounded the team’s preparations before their journey to North America.

It is no secret that Germany is currently facing a shortage of prolific strikers. Niclas Fullkrug, once known for his sharp finishing, was left out due to poor form at his new club, AC Milan.

In his place, Nagelsmann has placed his faith in young talent Nick Woltemade to partner Kai Havertz in attack. Although many analysts believe the squad’s composition isn’t perfect, Neuer’s presence between the posts seems to give the coach full confidence moving forward.

“I have repeatedly emphasized that our goal remains the same: we want to become world champions,” Nagelsmann declared passionately.

Nagelsmann’s Optimism Resonates Back Home

Interestingly, the wave of optimism in Germany has also resonated strongly in Indonesia.

The enthusiasm for the global tournament has been echoed by local football figures, including former Persik Kediri coach Budiardjo Thalib.

The coach, who once led the pride of Kediri to promotion to Liga 1, openly declared Germany as his top pick to win the 2026 World Cup.

Budiardjo said he sees similarities between Germany’s playing philosophy and his own coaching ideals.

According to him, Germany’s true strength lies in their highly organized defence and exceptional discipline, especially in one-on-one situations against opponents.

This consistency is what keeps him loyal to supporting the German team year after year.

“The German style matches my own football philosophy—playing from foot to foot,” he said, as quoted by SuryaMalang.

“Every World Cup, I always support Germany because they are truly strong and consistently reach the semifinals,” he concluded.
