Following similar incidents involving the NTA and CBSE, a major lapse has come to light regarding IIT Roorkee, the institute responsible for conducting the JEE Advanced exam. A cybersecurity researcher claimed that the personal data of lakhs of candidates for JEE Advanced—the country's premier engineering entrance exam—was leaked online due to a misconfiguration in cloud storage. After this claim went viral on social media, IIT Roorkee took immediate action, acknowledging the oversight publicly on X. The institute stated, "Thank you for bringing the cloud storage configuration issue to our attention. This matter is being rectified on a priority basis."
This raises the question: following a data leak of such magnitude, are the students' admit cards and result records secure?
Are your scores and ranks safe?
IIT Roorkee has offered reassurance to students and parents by highlighting a crucial detail. According to the institute, all data at the affected cloud location was in 'read-only' mode. This essentially means that while outsiders could view the data, it was impossible to alter it or tamper with the scores in any way. The institute also commended researcher Rayal Anil for responsibly bringing this vulnerability to light promptly.
