TRIBUNLOMBOK.COM – The Volgograd Arena is set to host an international friendly match between Russia and Burkina Faso on Saturday, 6 June 2026, at 01:00 WITA (Lombok time, NTB).

The host nation has been under a competition ban for more than four years but has maintained its match sharpness through a series of friendlies. Meanwhile, the visiting side has also had to settle for exhibition matches after failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

After going unbeaten in 18 games—including a record 11–0 win over Brunei—Russia’s recent form has dipped, winning only one of their last four matches.

The national team recently faced Egypt, who will feature in the World Cup, at Misr Stadium in Cairo last week, suffering a narrow 1–0 defeat after managing just one shot on target.

They now return home this weekend aiming to bounce back and build momentum ahead of their upcoming clash against Trinidad and Tobago next Tuesday.

Burkina Faso, on the other hand, enjoyed one of their strongest World Cup qualifying campaigns last year, collecting 21 points from 10 matches and finishing second in Group A.

However, due to CAF’s decision to exclude results against sixth-placed teams when determining the best runners-up, Les Étalons narrowly missed out on the playoffs on goal difference.

During the last international break, the visitors faced Guinea-Bissau twice, winning 5–0 in the first match before drawing 1–1 in the second.

They will now look to test themselves against a much stronger opponent on Saturday.

Head-to-Head: Russia vs Burkina Faso

  • Saturday’s game will mark the first-ever meeting between Russia and Burkina Faso.
  • Russia have not won any of their last three matches against African nations, recording two draws and one defeat.
  • Burkina Faso last faced a European side in March 2022, losing 3–0 to Belgium in Brussels.
  • In the latest FIFA World Rankings, Russia are placed 36th, while Burkina Faso sit lower at 62nd.

Team News: Russia vs Burkina Faso

Russia head into Saturday’s fixture with coach Valeri Karpin expected to make changes to the side that lost in Cairo, also keeping an eye on next week’s game against Trinidad and Tobago.

Manchester United academy midfielder Amir Ibragimov, 18, was an unused substitute against Egypt and may get his chance to feature at the Volgograd Arena. Meanwhile, Maksim Glushenkov, Ivan Sergeyev, and Ivan Oblyakov are likely to form the attacking trio.

Viktor Melyokhin, Ilya Vakhaniya, Aleksandr Silyanov, and Igor Diveev are all in contention to start in defence as Karpin looks to strengthen a backline that conceded in Cairo.

Coach Abdou has named a 25-man squad for Saturday’s match and the subsequent friendly against Belarus on 9 June, with six new players receiving call-ups.

Among the newcomers are 20-year-old defender Cyril Dao, Hanaby Hadalou Sagne, and Arthur Zagre—the latter having previously represented France at U-18 and U-19 levels before switching allegiance to Burkina Faso—all of whom could make their senior debuts on Saturday.

Goalkeeper Herve Koffi, the most experienced member with 70 caps, is expected to start between the posts. However, Abdou may also consider giving 22-year-old Kilian Nikiema some minutes across the two games.

Score Prediction: Russia vs Burkina Faso

Sportskeeda’s Prediction

Although one win in five matches is hardly confidence-inspiring, we back the hosts to recover from their recent slump. Their superior quality and home advantage could prove decisive.

Predicted Score: Russia 2–0 Burkina Faso

Sportsmole’s Prediction

Russia’s greater squad depth could eventually make the difference, even though Karpin’s men have looked unconvincing in recent outings and must improve significantly from their performance in Cairo to avoid another disappointing result.

Burkina Faso’s unbeaten start under Abdou and their attacking prowess against Guinea-Bissau suggest that the Stallions will put up a strong fight. As this is the first-ever encounter between the two sides, Russia are expected to edge a competitive match likely to feature goals from both teams.

Predicted Score: Russia 2–1 Burkina Faso

TribunLombok’s Prediction

Despite Russia’s higher FIFA ranking and home advantage, their recent performances have been far from convincing. The defeat to Egypt highlighted a lack of attacking creativity, as they managed only one shot on target throughout the game.

On the other hand, Burkina Faso arrive with considerable confidence. They were highly competitive during World Cup qualifying and demonstrated strong attacking form with a 5–0 win over Guinea-Bissau. The current generation—including Edmond Tapsoba, Dango Ouattara, and Lassina Traore—possess the quality to compete with mid-level European teams.

Russia are likely to rotate their squad, given their upcoming fixture against Trinidad and Tobago in a few days. This could disrupt their rhythm, especially with several young players expected to feature.

Burkina Faso, meanwhile, have strong motivation to test themselves against a higher-ranked opponent. With Edmond Tapsoba leading the defence and experienced goalkeeper Herve Koffi between the posts, they have a solid foundation to absorb pressure from the hosts.

As this is only a friendly and both sides continue to build toward the UEFA Nations League and other international commitments, a draw seems a reasonable outcome. Russia may dominate possession, but Burkina Faso have the capability to score and take a positive result back home.

Predicted Score: Russia 1–1 Burkina Faso
