The Iranian national football team is poised to compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup following the confirmation from US officials that visas have been granted to the players. This announcement alleviates weeks of uncertainty regarding the team's travel arrangements. The World Cup will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, but Iran's preparations have faced challenges due to ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran, as well as issues stemming from the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

A US official informed ABC News that members of Iran's World Cup squad have received the necessary visas to enter and participate in the tournament in the United States. The team submitted their visa applications through the US Embassy in Turkey, where they have been conducting a training camp in Antalya. US Ambassador to Turkey, Tom Barrack, acknowledged this development in a post on X, expressing pride in the embassy's efforts to process the visas for Iran's national team. He stated, "Sports transcends borders, and we look forward to welcoming competitors and fans from around the world." Additionally, a US official confirmed to the Associated Press that visas were issued for players, coaches, trainers, and some support staff, although it remains uncertain if any applications were denied.

Iran's Team Adjusts Plans Amid Security Issues

While Iran is confirmed to participate in the tournament, the team's involvement has been marred by visa issues, political tensions, and logistical hurdles. Iran is set to kick off its World Cup journey on June 15. However, due to security concerns, the team's training base was relocated from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana, Mexico, shortly before the tournament. The team is expected to arrive in Tijuana early Sunday.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that American authorities would closely observe the Iranian delegation for any individuals linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). He emphasized, "We have no problem with the athletes or their support staff, but we will not allow individuals with ties to the IRGC to be part of their delegation." Iran's matches include a game against New Zealand on June 15 and Belgium on June 21 in Inglewood, California, followed by a match against Egypt in Seattle on June 26. Despite the concerns raised in recent months, FIFA has confirmed that Iran will fully participate in the World Cup, and the recent visa approvals represent a significant step forward for Team Melli's campaign.
