Tragic Fire in Malviya Nagar Claims 21 Lives, Raises Safety Concerns in Delhi

A catastrophic fire erupted at the 'Flourish Stay' bed and breakfast hotel located in a narrow lane of Malviya Nagar, South Delhi, on Wednesday, shocking the entire capital. This heartbreaking incident resulted in the tragic deaths of 21 individuals, including foreign nationals, while 25 others sustained severe injuries. The event has once again highlighted serious concerns regarding fire safety measures and adherence to regulations in Delhi. This is not an isolated incident; recently, fires in Vivek Vihar and Palam also claimed the lives of nine people each. According to official statistics from the Delhi government and the Delhi Fire Service (DFS), fire incidents have escalated into a deadly crisis in the capital. Official data reveals that over the past six years, 543 lives have been lost due to fire-related accidents in the city.


Rising Fire Incidents and Casualties

Data from the Delhi government indicates that from 2019 to March 2026, a total of 543 fatalities have occurred due to fire-related incidents. Alarmingly, in just the first six months of 2026, 65 deaths have already been recorded. There has also been a significant increase in the number of reports received by the Delhi Fire Service in recent years. According to DFS statistics, the number of fire-related deaths was 84 in 2025-26, 90 in 2024-25, and 77 in 2023-24. In contrast, there were 41 deaths in 2020-21 and 55 in 2021-22. However, the number surged to 95 in 2022-23.


Historical Context of Fire Fatalities

The highest number of fire-related deaths recorded was in 2019-20, coinciding with the infamous Anaj Mandi fire incident, which resulted in 44 fatalities. This tragedy was one of the most severe in Delhi's history, second only to the Uphaar Cinema fire in 1997, which claimed 59 lives. According to statistics, between 2019 and 2025, a total of 4,403 individuals were injured in fire-related incidents. The number of emergency calls received by the Delhi Fire Service regarding fire emergencies has consistently risen, from 17,231 in 2019-20 to 20,379 in the last financial year.
