In a decisive move against unauthorized constructions and the commercial misuse of properties, the Delhi administration has initiated its largest crackdown to date. Since June 1, a widespread demolition and sealing campaign has been underway across all municipal areas of Delhi. To date, actions have been taken against 82 properties for demolition, while 43 others have been completely sealed. This stringent measure follows a devastating fire at a hotel in the Hauz Rani area near Hauz Khas, which tragically claimed the lives of 21 individuals, including foreign nationals, prompting the Delhi administration to take urgent action.

Government Directives and Ongoing Operations

According to a statement, the sealing and demolition operations are being conducted under the directives of Delhi's Lieutenant Governor, Tarunjeet Singh Sandhu, and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) reported that since June 1, demolition actions have been executed against 12 properties in the South Zone, seven in the Civil Lines Zone, and eight in the Narela Zone. Additionally, 14 properties in the South Zone have been sealed during this period.

Focus on Violations and Safety Standards

Officials indicated that over 40 houses in the Said-ul-Ajaib area have been marked for sealing due to violations of building regulations. Furthermore, at least 12 hotels operating under the 'Bed and Breakfast' scheme in Hauz Rani and Malviya Nagar have also been identified for scrutiny. Various commercial establishments, including numerous restaurants in South Delhi's Said-ul-Ajaib, Hauz Khas village, and surrounding areas, are also under investigation.

Tragic Incident Sparks Stringent Measures

It is important to note that the horrific fire at a hotel in the Hauz Rani area of South Delhi on Wednesday shocked the entire capital. This tragic incident resulted in the deaths of 21 people, including foreign nationals, due to burns and asphyxiation. Preliminary investigations revealed that safety standards and building bylaws were grossly violated at the hotel. In light of this catastrophic event, the Delhi administration is now adopting a very strict stance.
