Canada men’s national football team were restricted to a 1-1 draw by the Republic of Ireland in their final preparatory fixture ahead of the FIFA World Cup.
Even though Canada dominated possession and created several scoring opportunities in Montreal, their only goal came through an Irish own goal in the first half. Ireland levelled the score when Chiedozie Ogbene struck from close range after following up a saved penalty just past the hour mark. Head coach Jesse Marsch appreciated his side’s intensity but acknowledged that more refinement is required before the tournament kicks off. Tournament co-hosts Canada will begin their World Cup journey against Bosnia-Herzegovina on June 12.
Defensive talisman Alphonso Davies sat out the game due to a hamstring issue and remains a doubt for the opening clash.
