If you are planning to buy a new phone, this information could be crucial for you. Cybercriminals are increasingly devising new methods to defraud people, creating fake websites to steal their hard-earned money. Additionally, online shoppers are being targeted through fake refund SMS messages, bogus flash sale groups, and fraudulent e-commerce sites. Here, we explain how these scams operate and how you can stay safe. This information has been shared by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (Ministry of Home Affairs) via its official X handle.
How does the scam work?
Cybercriminals create fake websites resembling platforms like Amazon and Flipkart to lure customers with massive discounts. They also defraud people by getting them to scan QR codes during "Cash on Delivery" transactions. In some instances, scammers make calls claiming "EMI approval" to solicit sensitive information such as OTPs, UPI PINs, or CVV numbers. Furthermore, clicking on links in SMS messages regarding "failed orders" or refunds can lead to malware infections on your phone.
How to stay safe?
Always verify the website's URL before making a payment.
Never share your OTP, CVV, or banking details with anyone.
Never scan an unknown QR code to receive money.
Always track your orders through official apps or websites only.
Shop online only via trusted and verified e-commerce platforms.
What to do if you fall victim to a scam?
If you or someone you know falls victim to such a scam, report it immediately at https://cybercrime.gov.in/ or call the helpline number 1930.
