Praggnanandhaa R, an athlete from Adani Sportsline's 'Garv Hai' program, has etched his name in history by becoming the first Indian to win the prestigious Norway Chess tournament, following an impressive performance in Oslo. The 20-year-old Grandmaster outperformed a competitive field that included World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen, reigning World Champion Gukesh D, Alireza Firouzja, Wesley So, and Vincent Keymer.

During the tournament, he achieved a remarkable feat by defeating Carlsen twice and securing a vital classical win against Gukesh. As he entered the final round, Praggnanandhaa managed to draw with fellow Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi before triumphing in the Armageddon tiebreak, which ultimately placed him at the top of the leaderboard and marked a significant milestone for Indian chess.

A Landmark Achievement at the 'Wimbledon of Chess'

Founded in 2013, Norway Chess is recognized as one of the most prestigious events in the international chess calendar. Despite India's rich chess heritage and the participation of numerous top Indian Grandmasters, neither five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand nor current World Champion Gukesh D had previously secured this title, making Praggnanandhaa's victory particularly noteworthy. His success comes at a time when Indian chess is experiencing a remarkable resurgence, with a new generation of Grandmasters consistently challenging and defeating the world's elite players.

Often referred to as the 'Wimbledon of Chess,' Norway Chess attracts many of the highest-ranked players globally. This year's tournament featured a strong lineup, including multiple world-title contenders and some of the sport's most accomplished Grandmasters. Throughout the competition, Praggnanandhaa demonstrated exceptional resilience and composure, overcoming setbacks with decisive performances to ultimately claim the championship.

His victories over Carlsen were especially significant, as Praggnanandhaa became one of the few players to defeat the Norwegian twice in a single tournament and recorded three classical wins against the five-time World Champion. This triumph further solidifies his status among the brightest talents in chess and highlights the growing strength of Indian chess.
