Here is the profile of Hong Myung-bo, the man entrusted with leading the South Korea national football team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Hong Myung-bo, aged 57, has returned to manage South Korea with the expectation of guiding his country deep into the 2026 World Cup tournament.

He was officially appointed as the head coach of the South Korean national team in July 2024.

Hong took over from Jurgen Klinsmann, marking his comeback to the national team’s coaching role after nearly a decade.

Success with Clubs and the National Team

Hong Myung-bo’s appointment was largely influenced by his impressive record at both club and national levels.

Before returning to the South Korean national team, he led Ulsan HD to consecutive K League 1 titles in 2022 and 2023.

Earlier in his career, he guided the South Korea U-23 team to a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics — a historic milestone for Korean football.

Upon taking charge of the senior team again, Hong quickly secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

South Korea finished the Asian qualifying rounds unbeaten, recording six wins and four draws.

This achievement ensured South Korea’s place in the 2026 World Cup finals with an undefeated record throughout the Asian qualifiers.

At the tournament, Hong Myung-bo’s South Korea will compete in Group A alongside Mexico, South Africa, and the Czech Republic.

A South Korean Legend at the World Cup

Before making his name as a coach, Hong Myung-bo enjoyed a distinguished career as a player.

He became the first Asian player to appear in four consecutive World Cup editions — 1990, 1994, 1998, and 2002.

The peak of his playing career came during the 2002 World Cup, where he captained South Korea to a historic semifinal appearance.

For his outstanding performances throughout the tournament, Hong was honoured with the Bronze Ball award as the third-best player of the 2002 World Cup.

In addition to his international achievements, Hong also had a successful club career, representing Pohang Steelers, Bellmare Hiratsuka, Kashiwa Reysol, and Los Angeles Galaxy before retiring and transitioning into coaching.

Busy Schedule May Increase Injury Risks

According to football analyst Adrian, as reported on Sunday (31 May 2026), the packed match calendar poses potential injury risks for players.

He noted that the close proximity between club competitions and international tournaments could heighten the risk of injuries due to limited recovery time.

“In my opinion, it increases the possibility of player injuries. Hopefully, no one gets injured during the tournament, as it could affect team strength and overall competition quality,” he said.
