Sandro Tonali’s situation at Newcastle United has become one of the most intriguing midfield storylines of the summer. As per reports from the Manchester Evening News, there is a growing belief that the Italian midfielder may be seeking an exit from St James’ Park, and if that happens, a move to another Premier League side appears to be the most probable scenario.
Both Manchester United and Manchester City have been linked with the player in different contexts.
The matter is complicated by Newcastle’s strong financial position. Having already sold Anthony Gordon, the club is under no pressure to accept a low-priced offer for one of their key midfielders.
This implies that if Tonali is truly set on departing, he might have to personally push for a transfer.
Arsenal have been associated with Tonali for several months, and comments made by his agent earlier this year were seen as a hint of admiration towards the Emirates Stadium.
Fabrizio Romano has also reported that Arsenal hold a serious interest in Tonali, which aligns with their current needs. After winning the Premier League and narrowly missing out in the Champions League final, Mikel Arteta’s side requires additional high-quality midfield depth.
Tonali would add control, aggression, experience, and tactical awareness to Arsenal’s squad.
Manchester United also present an appealing option. Michael Carrick is in the process of rebuilding United’s midfield. The club has already finalised a deal for Atalanta’s Éderson, yet reports suggest they are continuing to explore further midfield reinforcements of elite calibre.
Although Tonali’s transfer fee would be substantial, his arrival would significantly enhance United’s tempo and physical presence in midfield.
Manchester City’s level of interest could depend largely on Elliot Anderson’s situation. City have already seen their opening bid rejected by Nottingham Forest, who are reportedly demanding over £100 million for the England midfielder.
According to Romano, Tonali could emerge as a strong alternative for City if the Anderson transfer fails to materialise.
However, if City succeed in signing Anderson, they are expected to withdraw from the pursuit of Tonali.
A potential departure for Tonali would represent a major development for Newcastle United, though such a move still appears challenging. Given Newcastle’s contractual and financial strength, any deal involving the Italian midfielder is unlikely to come at a discount.
