Serge-Philippe Raux-Yao could well be the most dominant aerial presence currently playing outside Europe’s top five leagues — but is he prepared to make the next big move?

Raux-Yao seems perfectly suited to the current footballing climate that prizes physicality and defensive solidity.

The game has shifted back toward strength and aggression, and commanding centre-backs who dominate opponents in the air and protect the penalty area are once again invaluable assets rather than luxuries.

But the question remains: can Raux-Yao contribute effectively when his team is in possession? Here’s a quick two-minute scouting breakdown.

Name: Serge-Philippe Raux-Yao Position/s: Centre-back Age: 26 (Born: May 30, 1999) Nationality: France Height: 1.97m (6ft 6in) Preferred Foot: Left Current Club: Rapid Wien

Raux-Yao began his career with Auxerre in France but did not make any senior appearances for the club. He later moved to Belgium to join Cercle Brugge, where his playing time was limited. His career gained momentum after a successful spell in Ligue 2 with Rodez, leading to his current role with Rapid Wien in Austria.

Left-footed central defenders are rare, and at 26, Raux-Yao is a powerful, imposing figure entering his prime. Having established himself as arguably the strongest aerial defender in Austrian football, he has also earned recognition for his passing range — despite Rapid Wien’s poor performance in the Conference League, where they finished 36th out of 36 teams.

Aerial presence and strength: Standing at 6ft 6in, Raux-Yao is a dominant force in aerial duels. His upper-body strength and physical prowess allow him to neutralise target men effectively, making him well-suited for both physical battles and low-block defensive setups.

Ball-winning and positional sense: Raux-Yao’s positioning is one of his key strengths. He rarely finds himself out of place and demonstrates impressive spatial awareness. Often deployed as the ‘sweeper’ in Rapid Wien’s defensive line rather than the primary aggressor, he is reliable at cleaning up loose balls and times his tackles with precision, aided by his long reach.

Tactical and technical assurance: Best utilised as the left-sided centre-back in a back four, Raux-Yao displays composure with the ball at his feet and shows good press resistance. Although naturally left-footed, he is not overly reliant on that side, which allows him to operate centrally in a back three if required. His calmness under pressure makes him a dependable option for building play from the back.

Passing: The French defender is an accomplished passer. His left foot gives him the ability to deliver long diagonal passes towards the right flank, a valuable tool for quickly switching the play.

Acceleration over short distances: Raux-Yao moves confidently when advancing with the ball and is not slow, but he does lack a burst of acceleration when up against quick, agile forwards. His large frame makes it difficult for him to change direction rapidly, and he may need to refine his defensive approach in those one-on-one scenarios.

Tendency to be ‘ball-focused’: Although he generally reads the game well when out of possession, Raux-Yao can sometimes be guilty of focusing too much on the ball during extended defensive phases. This can occasionally lead to losing track of runners behind him — an area of concentration he needs to improve.

Goal contributions: Despite his towering height and strength, Raux-Yao has not yet made his physical advantage count at set-pieces in attack. With further work on his positioning and timing in the opponent’s box, he has the potential to become a genuine threat at both ends of the pitch.

With top clubs increasingly targeting younger defenders, Raux-Yao represents a potential bargain for mid-table sides in Europe’s elite leagues. As football trends towards more physically demanding play, the Frenchman’s attributes could be an excellent fit for a team that values strength but also looks to maintain a proactive, attacking style.
