The use of AI is increasing rapidly, from writing emails to school studies and office work, people are now becoming dependent on AI tools, but do you know how much water OpenAI's popular AI tool ChatGPT requires to write 100 words for you? Recently, research by the University of California Riverside has revealed that if a person dictates 100 words through ChatGPT, then ChatGPT needs at least one bottle of water for this work.
Be it ChatGPT or any big AI model, all these tasks require a big data center. There are thousands of servers in these centers which generate a lot of heat and to reduce this heat, water based cooling system is installed. According to the report, ChatGPT requires about 519 ml of water to write 100 words, which is the same as a normal water bottle.
Researchers said that due to increasing demand for AI, the number of data centers and their size is also increasing. Data centers of companies like Microsoft and Meta are drinking billions of gallons of water, many companies have even admitted that water consumption has increased due to the increasing pressure on AI.
Information has come to light in the report that the water used for AI is mostly being taken from areas where water is already very less. Local people in Mexico, Chile and some parts of America have expressed concern about data center projects.
Research has shown that if AI continues to expand at this rapid rate, the global situation may become even more serious by 2027. The need for AI could be equivalent to almost half of Britain's groundwater withdrawal in a year, which is a matter of concern.
