Jaipur, 8 June. A complete ban on internet services has been imposed in large parts of Jaipur city for the next 24 hours from midnight on June 7. The order, issued by the Divisional Commissioner’s office, comes in response to a mass removal of encroachments drive by the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) from Monday June 8, which is expected to lead to fierce protests by various organizations in the city and spread of inflammatory material on social media. The decision of the administration to suspend internet services in the name of maintaining law and order is not new, but it has always been at the center of controversies.

Internet restrictions in civil matters like the Encroachment Hatao Abhiyan, viewed from a critical angle, expose the “quick fix” mentality of the administration. Experts say that striking a balance between maintaining law and order and civil rights, however, is a big challenge for the administration. Internet shutdown should be used as a “last resort” and not as a “quick response” that would cause unnecessary inconvenience to the general public and violate their rights.

In this order issued on the request of the Police Commissioner, Jaipur, Divisional Commissioner V. Saravan Kumar has made it clear that maintaining law and order is his priority in view of the JDA action. Police fear that during the removal of encroachments campaign, violence may erupt in the name of protests, public property may be damaged and social media platforms may be misused to disturb communal harmony.

There will be net ban in these areas:

However, the area around Rajasthan International Center located in Jhalana Dungri has been exempted from this restriction.
