Why did Trinamool Congress MPs rebel against Mamata Banerjee? Inside story with 3 ‘conditions’

After the defeat of Trinamool Congress in the West Bengal Assembly elections, the party is on the verge of division. TMC's legislative party has broken and now it is the turn of the parliamentary party to break. Mamata Banerjee attended the meeting of India Alliance on Monday. At the same time, rebel MPs of Trinamool Congress raised their voice against the party leadership. Rebel MPs held a meeting with Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav in the presence of Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari. After the meeting, MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar handed over signed letters of 20 MPs to the office of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. In this letter, the rebel MPs have claimed to form a separate group.

What is the reason for this? TMC MPs are leaving Mamata Banerjee's side. They are not leaving the party without thinking. The MPs have taken a firm guarantee from the BJP leadership before officially leaving the party.

On Monday afternoon, a high-voltage meeting was held at the Delhi house of Union Minister and West Bengal Observer Bhupendra Yadav. BJP MP Nishikant Dubey and West Bengal Chief Minister Subhendu Adhikari along with a large group of rebel TMC MPs were present in the meeting.

Rebel MPs asked for this guarantee

Sources in Naban (State Secretariat) and Delhi say that this possible change depends on three main demands of the rebel MPs:

  1. Guarantee of 2029 Lok Sabha ticket: The main demand is the advance assurance of party tickets for their respective constituencies in the 2029 general elections. The MPs want quick confirmation so that there is no impact on their political future after leaving TMC.
  2. Central Security System: Many MPs fear that leaving TMC would mean losing state-level security and they would have to face political retaliation if they return to West Bengal. Many former officials who had earlier received more security, but after the rebellion, want more security.
  3. Office and post of Chairman: At least one influential member of the rebels wants more than tickets and security. He is expecting a big reward like the post of chairman of a central commission or a government corporation.

Who attended the meeting with Bhupendra Yadav

It is reported that eleven Lok Sabha MPs attended the meeting held at Bhupendra Yadav's house:

  1. Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar (Barasat)
  2. Prasun Banerjee (Howrah)
  3. Shatabdi Roy (Birbhum)
  4. asit goods
  5. Bappi Haldhar (Mathurapur)
  6. June Malia (Medinipur)
  7. Jagdish Basunia (Cooch Behar)
  8. Kalipada Soren (Jhargram)
  9. Arup Chakraborty (Bankura)
  10. Parth Bhowmik (Barsaat/Barrackpur)
  11. Sharmila Sarkar (Burdwan East)

Who is ready but absent:

Sources said four more MPs had already agreed to terms with Delhi but were not present themselves:

  1. Rachna Banerjee (Hooghly) — currently on a foreign trip with her family.
  2. Yusuf Pathan (Behrampur)
  3. Deb Adhikari (Ghatal)
  4. Shatrughan Sinha (Asansol)

Apart from this, three more MPs are in active talks with the leadership; If all the conditions are finalized, then senior leaders will join the rebel MPs. If this is accomplished, it will be one of the biggest coordinated defection from TMC to BJP in the recent political history of West Bengal and Mamata Banerjee's party will completely disintegrate after the election defeat.
