Sam Johnstone might be given an unexpected opportunity to leave Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Manchester United reportedly showing interest. The 33-year-old is anticipated to depart this summer as Wolves reshape their goalkeeping department following their relegation from the Premier League.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Manchester United are assessing the possibility of bringing back their former academy goalkeeper to serve as backup for their current first-choice, Senne Lammens.

Johnstone progressed through United’s youth academy and later went on loan spells with Walsall and Aston Villa. In 2018, he joined West Bromwich Albion in a deal worth an initial £6.5 million and featured in 167 matches over four seasons.

He subsequently spent two campaigns with Crystal Palace before moving to Wolves in 2024. Over two years at Molineux, Johnstone has managed only 27 appearances, having missed the final months of the recent season due to a shoulder injury.

Meanwhile, the future of Aston Villa’s goalkeeper Emi Martinez remains unclear, with Juventus reportedly targeting him after their hopes of signing Alisson failed. As per Gazzetta Dello Sport, the Italian side are keeping a close eye on developments.

Martinez was on the verge of leaving Villa last summer, but a potential transfer to Manchester United fell through. The 33-year-old went on to play a crucial role under Unai Emery, guiding Villa to a Europa League triumph and helping them secure a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Although Villa are not actively pushing for his sale, a significant offer could lead them to reconsider. Any updates on his situation are unlikely before the World Cup, as Martinez remains focused on aiding Argentina in their title defence.
