ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne is reportedly preparing a major transfer push ahead of the upcoming EuroLeague season, with indications that the French club is targeting two standout players from the German national basketball team.

According to Basketnews, world and European champion Daniel Theis has emerged as ASVEL’s primary transfer target. The report also mentions that the club is exploring the possibility of signing Nick Weiler-Babb.

The French side has already demonstrated its lofty ambitions by offering legendary coach Tony Parker a lucrative contract extension, while discussions with point guard Sylvain Francisco are said to be progressing well. Together, these moves highlight the club’s growing ambition to challenge Europe’s elite.

Veteran forward Theis, who played a crucial part in Germany’s historic gold medal triumphs at the World Cup and European Championships, is reportedly among ASVEL’s most sought-after acquisitions. For the 34-year-old, this potential move would represent a shift within familiar territory, as his current deal with AS Monaco concludes at the end of the season.

Although Monaco are currently fighting to retain their domestic crown in the French playoff semi-finals, Theis remains unavailable for selection.

Theis was instrumental in guiding Monaco to the EuroLeague final.

The experienced big man has been sidelined since late April following a hand injury sustained just minutes into Bayern Munich’s fiercely contested EuroLeague play-off encounter against Olympiacos Piraeus. The injury prematurely ended what had otherwise been a commendable season.

Across 58 appearances for Monaco’s star-studded squad, Theis averaged just under 20 minutes per game, contributing 9.9 points and 4.9 rebounds on average.

His move to Monaco last season marked a natural return to European basketball after his NBA stint ended, where he had earned a reputation as a dependable role player in the United States.

His strong physical play and defensive intensity were key to Monaco’s run to their first-ever EuroLeague final, underlining that his competitive edge remains unshaken.

Meanwhile, Nick Weiler-Babb has endured a challenging period in his career.

The defensive-minded guard, a long-serving member of FC Bayern Basketball and a naturalised German international, opted for a new chapter last summer by signing a two-year deal with Turkish powerhouse Anadolu Efes.

However, instead of competing for EuroLeague glory, the Istanbul-based side found themselves near the bottom of the standings, prompting speculation about potential transfers.

A move to ASVEL could reunite Theis and Weiler-Babb, who previously represented Germany together at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, capturing the admiration of supporters. Now, the two key figures of the DBB squad could once again share the court—this time in French club colours.
