SIM Card Active Tips: Millions of people in India use prepaid mobile connections, yet many users face the issue of their numbers suddenly shutting down. Surprisingly, the SIM often stops working even when there is a balance in the mobile account.

The reason isn't forgetting to recharge, but rather a lack of awareness regarding validity rules. If you have ever experienced your calls or internet stopping despite having a balance, it is important to understand the reason behind it.

Balance and validity are not the same thing

Most people believe that a SIM remains active as long as there is money in the mobile account. However, telecom company systems operate differently.

Two things are crucial in a prepaid connection:

Account balance and plan validity.

The balance simply indicates the amount of money in your account, whereas validity determines whether you can make calls, use the internet, or receive calls. Once the validity expires, the number enters a 'grace period.' This period typically lasts between 15 and 30 days. After this, the risk of the number being permanently deactivated increases.

A hidden trick to keep your number active at a low cost

Many users are unaware that telecom companies offer low-cost recharge options specifically designed to extend validity.

These plans usually range from ₹10 to ₹50. While they do not offer large amounts of data or unlimited calling, they extend the SIM's validity and keep the number active.

Such plans are often tucked away in the 'Top-Up,' 'Value Recharge,' or 'Special Recharge' sections of the company's app. Consequently, many users overlook them and are compelled to purchase more expensive plans. Set a reminder before the expiry date

The easiest way to prevent your mobile number from being deactivated is to set a reminder 3–4 days before the validity expires. This gives you time to choose the right plan and avoids the need for a rushed, expensive recharge at the last minute.

You could lose your balance if the number gets deactivated

If a SIM card is deactivated after remaining inactive for a long period, any remaining balance in the account may be lost. In most cases, telecom companies do not refund this amount.

This issue can be particularly significant for those who use a secondary SIM solely for data, OTPs, or travel purposes. Such numbers are prone to deactivation if left unused for extended periods.

Do just one thing every month

Just as you regularly check your bank balance, make it a habit to check your mobile number's validity once a month. Most telecom apps display validity details right on the home screen.

A small, timely recharge can keep your number active, preserve your existing balance, and save you the hassle of getting a new SIM card. Therefore, it is far wiser to keep track of your validity in advance rather than waiting for the number to be deactivated.
