Kylian Mbappe has stated that he is ‘saving’ his best form for the upcoming World Cup after going three matches without scoring for France. Despite his struggles, coach Didier Deschamps remains unconcerned, while Michael Olise stole the limelight with a brilliant hat-trick in a 3-1 win over Northern Ireland.
France head into the World Cup with mixed fortunes in attack
In their final pre-World Cup fixture, France claimed a 3-1 victory against Northern Ireland, though the game highlighted contrasting displays from two of their attacking stars. Mbappe, who has an impressive record of 56 goals in 98 international appearances, failed to find the net for the third consecutive match. Although he created multiple chances, his finishing touch was missing. Neither the player nor Deschamps appeared overly worried, as Olise’s sensational form took centre stage.
The Bayern Munich winger delivered a remarkable hat-trick in Lille, continuing his excellent run at club level and reinforcing his importance to the national setup. His performance demonstrated the confidence and flair that have become hallmarks of his play in recent months.
Mbappe downplays concerns over his form
Despite a frustrating evening in which Mbappe seemed out of rhythm in the attacking third, Deschamps was relaxed about his captain’s recent dip in efficiency. The manager brushed off any suggestion that the Real Madrid forward was losing confidence.
“I’m not going to worry. It’s true he’s had several chances, but he hasn’t been clinical. He told me he was saving it for the USA, so I’m fine with that,” Deschamps told TF1 with a smile.
Olise shines as France’s standout performer
While Mbappe struggled to impose himself, Olise delivered a masterclass that confirmed his status as France’s most in-form attacker ahead of the tournament. The 24-year-old showed great instinct, scoring twice from close range on either side of half-time before sealing his hat-trick with a superb curling strike from distance.
Deschamps was full of praise for the Bayern winger, hinting that Olise could currently be France’s main attacking threat. “He’s radiant, just like his season at Bayern. Everything is easy for him. He’s efficient, and that’s great. We’ll also need other players,” the coach commented.
Attention turns to the World Cup
France will now head to their training base near Boston as preparations intensify for the World Cup. Deschamps will aim to fine-tune his side’s chemistry while ensuring that key players are in peak condition. Both Mbappe and Olise are expected to play leading roles as France begin their campaign in North America, drawn in Group I alongside Senegal, Iraq, and Norway.
