Liverpool have been battling with several clubs to secure the signature of a highly rated young talent.
Following the appointment of Andoni Iraola as their new head coach last week, Liverpool are eager to make a strong start in the transfer market.
The Reds parted ways with Arne Slot after a disappointing campaign that saw them finish fifth in the Premier League and fail to lift any trophies. Iraola has now been entrusted with the task of restoring Liverpool’s competitiveness for top honours next season.
The former Bournemouth manager is already aware that he will be without key players Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson, all of whom are leaving the club before pre-season begins. Efforts are ongoing to rebuild the squad capable of competing on multiple fronts.
Liverpool invested nearly £500 million last summer in an attempt to strengthen their dominance in English football after clinching the 2024/25 Premier League title. However, several of their big-name signings, including Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, failed to live up to expectations.
This summer, the Reds were confident of securing a lower-profile signing early in the transfer window, but fresh developments suggest they are set for disappointment.
Over the past few weeks, Liverpool have been negotiating a deal to sign 16-year-old Hertha Berlin midfielder Kennet Eichhorn, who has a release clause reportedly valued between €8-9 million (approximately £7-7.5 million).
The Merseyside club believed they had made 'significant progress' in their pursuit of the Germany Under-17 international, who was also being closely monitored by Manchester City and Chelsea. However, as reported by TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, the teenager has turned down the move to Anfield.
Bailey stated, “Sources suggested the Reds were increasingly confident of persuading Eichhorn to join them, with Liverpool’s reputation for nurturing young players seen as a major pull.”
He added, “TEAMtalk understands that all interested Premier League clubs have now been informed the midfielder will not be moving to England at this stage of his career.”
The defensive midfielder featured 19 times for Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga 2 last season and is now poised to make the step up to Germany’s top division.
RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund were also keen on signing him, but according to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Eichhorn is instead set to join the reigning 2024 Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen.
Ornstein wrote, “Eichhorn was being courted by top clubs from both Germany and England but opted to continue his development with the 2024 Bundesliga champions. Considering the fierce competition for his signature, Bayer Leverkusen’s success in securing him is seen as a major coup.”
This news follows another setback for Liverpool, as RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande has reportedly indicated a preference for joining back-to-back European champions Paris Saint-Germain instead of the Reds.
