The 2026 FIFA World Cup is expected to introduce hundreds of new talents to the global stage. With the tournament expanding to include 48 nations across the USA, Canada, and Mexico, fans will witness many players making their first-ever appearance at football’s most prestigious event.

For those watching closely, there will be a noticeable addition to the jerseys of debutants. Players taking part in their first World Cup will have a special 'debut' patch displayed on the upper-right side of their shirts, marking their introduction to the tournament.

This initiative forms part of a new agreement that will see Fanatics become FIFA’s official partner for trading cards and stickers starting in 2031, replacing Panini. Following a player’s debut, the patch will be removed from their shirt and transformed into a Topps trading card — a concept already popular in several American sports, including Major League Soccer (MLS).

In MLS, these patch cards are placed inside Chrome MLS hobby boxes, which are priced at approximately $120 (around ₹10,000) in the United States. Each box contains 21 packs of four cards, with two of those being patch cards that feature player autographs. However, it remains uncertain whether the World Cup edition will follow the same model.

Collectors eager to obtain these cards will need to be patient, as the Fanatics partnership will not commence until 2031. This means fans can expect a special card collection from the 2030 World Cup, which will be hosted jointly by Portugal, Morocco, and Spain. The opening fixtures of that tournament will be played in Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay to mark the 100th anniversary of the inaugural World Cup held in 1930.

Given the significance of these debut patches, some of the cards derived from the 2026 tournament could become exceptionally valuable over time, especially if the featured players rise to global superstardom — such as Erling Haaland, Lamine Yamal, or other emerging talents.

The 2026 World Cup will get underway on Thursday, June 11, with Mexico facing South Africa in the opening match in Mexico City. The final is scheduled to take place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday, July 19.
