DON'T MISS A MOMENT OF THE WORLD CUP

Thomas Tuchel believes England’s disrupted final World Cup warm-up match against Costa Rica offered his players an important lesson ahead of the tournament, despite severe weather in Florida forcing a delay to the game. The Three Lions’ preparations were thrown into disarray when a massive storm in Orlando postponed their last friendly before the World Cup begins.

Tuchel embraces the chaos

The England manager refused to let the unexpected delay affect his team’s spirits. Instead, he described the situation as a valuable test of focus and adaptability, qualities that will be essential once the World Cup gets underway. The friendly against Costa Rica was pushed back after a tropical storm lashed Orlando, but the German coach considered the disruption an early rehearsal for managing unforeseen challenges during the tournament.

Speaking to ITV, Tuchel said: “It gives us a little taste of what can happen in the tournament. We were aware of that before, now we experience it. It’s no problem. It should not be an excuse to lose our mood or patience or to lose our hunger to play the game.”

Managing the delay

Despite uncertainty over the revised kick-off time, the England squad stayed composed at their team hotel. Tuchel explained that the players had not yet left for the Inter&Co Stadium when they were informed of the bad weather, allowing them to easily adjust their pre-match schedule and travel arrangements.

“No problem at all. We realised it when we were still at the hotel so it was easy—we just said half an hour later in the bus and let’s go,” the former Chelsea boss added. His calm demeanour set the tone for the team, who are determined to build on their strong preparation after an intense training camp in the United States.

Pitch concerns dismissed

Initial worries that the torrential rain might cause the match to be cancelled—and deny England crucial match practice before facing Croatia—were soon eased. Tuchel personally inspected the pitch and was satisfied with how well the Florida surface coped with the heavy rainfall.

When asked if he was relieved the game could still go ahead, he responded: “It didn't cross my mind that it was so severe. We were aware that there can be thunder and lightning and some delays, but I didn’t think we would maybe miss the whole game. It seems like we have a game. I was out there. It seems quite dry—surprisingly dry for the amount of water that came down—but they know what they’re doing and it seems good to play.”

Focus remains on the tournament

The incident served as a reminder of the unpredictable weather conditions teams will encounter across North America during the summer tournament. Although the delay caused some inconvenience, Tuchel stressed that top-level players must stay mentally strong and adapt quickly to external challenges without losing focus or intensity. England’s ability to maintain that mindset will be tested immediately as they begin their Group L campaign against Croatia, Ghana, and Panama, with their opening match versus Croatia scheduled for 17 June.
