Somali referee Omar Artan has made a remarkable comeback to the global football stage after being chosen to officiate the UEFA Super Cup final between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa. The 34-year-old referee, who was recently denied entry to the United States for the 2026 World Cup, now finds himself at the centre of one of European football’s most prestigious fixtures.

UEFA gives Artan a major opportunity after U.S. visa rejection

In a surprising development, UEFA announced that Artan will oversee the season-opening UEFA Super Cup clash between PSG and Aston Villa on August 12 in Salzburg. This appointment is an important milestone for African refereeing, as Artan becomes the first referee from the continent to take charge of a major UEFA final.

The decision comes shortly after Artan was compelled to return to Somalia following his blocked entry into the United States. He had travelled to Miami to join the base camp for World Cup match officials but was turned away by U.S. Border and Customs Protection due to what they described as “vetting concerns.” The move has triggered widespread discussion across the global football community.

Ceferin praises ‘outstanding’ Somali referee

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin expressed strong support for Artan, focusing on his professional excellence rather than the border controversy. “Omar Artan is an excellent young yet highly experienced referee who has demonstrated his capability at the highest levels within the Confederation of African Football,” Ceferin said. “Football exists to unite people, and UEFA wants to show its respect to Omar and his exceptional refereeing skills, which have earned him this prestigious assignment.”

The appointment is widely regarded as a symbolic show of support from UEFA. Ceferin further noted, “I am thankful to my friend, CAF President Patrice Motsepe, for enthusiastically backing our initiative.” This move aligns with the Memorandum of Understanding signed between UEFA and CAF to strengthen collaboration in various fields, including officiating.

FIFA president advises critics to ‘chill’ over World Cup exclusion

Despite UEFA’s intervention, Artan remains excluded from the World Cup due to logistical challenges in relocating him to another host nation. Reports from ESPN suggested it would be “impractical” for him to operate from Mexico or Canada since all training and administrative briefings are based in Florida. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has faced criticism for not resolving the visa impasse.

When asked about the controversy, Infantino urged observers to “chill and relax,” stressing that FIFA “does not control everything.” Although Artan will not feature at the World Cup this year, his reputation in African football remains stellar. He was recently honoured as the 2025 CAF Men’s Referee of the Year and previously officiated the decisive second leg of the 2025-26 CAF Champions League final.

African football embraces a landmark moment

CAF President Patrice Motsepe celebrated the appointment as a triumph for African football and a testament to its growing global influence. “Omar Artan has made Somalia and the entire African continent extremely proud,” he said. “His recognition as the CAF Men’s Referee of the Year 2025 and his appointment as a referee for the FIFA World Cup 2026 highlight his world-class officiating abilities and the respect he commands internationally.”

The upcoming Super Cup final in Salzburg will serve as an important opportunity for Artan to showcase his skills on a European platform. Motsepe concluded, “This is a tremendous honour for Omar Artan and for African referees. It also stands as a powerful example of football’s unique ability to bring together and unite people across Africa, Europe, and the world.”
