Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown believes that fans at Old Trafford would not harbour much resentment if Marcus Rashford were to make a summer switch to Arsenal.
The 28-year-old England international faces an uncertain future after returning from the 2026 World Cup, with no clear path back into the Manchester United squad.
Rashford has spent the last two seasons away from Old Trafford — first on a short loan at Aston Villa, followed by an impressive campaign with LaLiga champions Barcelona. Despite contributing 28 goals during his time in Spain, the Catalan club has opted not to activate their £26 million buy option. Instead, they have reportedly finalised an €80 million (£69m) deal for former Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon.
Gordon’s arrival at the Camp Nou effectively closes the door on Rashford’s Barcelona stay. With Rashford’s reported weekly wages of £325,000, Manchester United are said to be eager to find a permanent transfer solution.
Speaking about the situation, Brown suggested that Rashford’s prolonged absence from Manchester United might soften the reaction from supporters if he were to join a Premier League rival like Arsenal. He explained that the emotional connection has lessened over the years compared to past cases of players leaving Old Trafford for North London.
“Would it hurt to see Marcus Rashford in an Arsenal shirt next season? Yes and no,” Brown said. “He’s already played for Aston Villa and Barcelona, so it wouldn’t feel like he’s gone straight there — it’s a bit different. He hasn’t played for Manchester United for quite a few years.”
He went on to recall another high-profile move that caused more pain among the fanbase. “Danny Welbeck leaving United for Arsenal was the one that really hurt because he was so young, and I don’t think he wanted to go. That was down to Louis van Gaal.”
Brown added, “I think it would be a bit different for Marcus. It would still feel strange to see him in an Arsenal shirt, but I felt the same when he was playing for Aston Villa too.”
With Anthony Gordon now occupying Rashford’s preferred position on the left wing at Barcelona, and Michael Carrick leading a new chapter at Manchester United, a permanent move to North London could offer Rashford the chance to rediscover his form and consistency in the Premier League.
