Manchester United are reportedly reshaping their midfield transfer strategy after being priced out of a move for Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson. As per TEAMtalk, the Red Devils are now eyeing Lens midfielder Mamadou Sangare, who is seen as a more attainable option both financially and tactically.
The report notes that United are preparing to launch a formal bid, with Lens expected to seek around €40 million for the 23-year-old midfielder.
Although that figure is still substantial, it remains significantly more reasonable compared to the massive sums being discussed for Anderson. The Guardian has previously stated that Manchester City had major offers turned down, with Forest holding firm for a fee that could potentially surpass the British transfer record.
Why Sangare could be the right fit for Manchester United
While Sangare does not yet boast the same Premier League reputation as Anderson, his profile aligns closely with the type of player United should be targeting. He is young, powerful, technically sound, and has drawn attention following a standout spell in Ligue 1.
According to United In Focus, his market value is estimated at around £33.5 million, a figure that fits better with United’s current financial plans.
From United’s perspective, this would represent a more strategic move in the market. The club has previously spent heavily on high-profile names with mixed results, and a shift towards identifying emerging talents before their valuations skyrocket could signal a smarter approach.
However, the club must also avoid being dragged into another costly transfer battle that they are unlikely to win. Sangare does come with some risk, as adaptation from French football to the Premier League is never guaranteed.
Still, if United are serious about building a sustainable and competitive squad, pursuing such deals could mark a positive change—ambitious yet realistic, and driven by long-term potential rather than short-term hype.
