Weekend plans may need a rethink as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued severe weather alerts for multiple regions in India on Saturday, 13 June 2026. Following a sudden shift in weather patterns amid intense heat, heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds is expected across northern, eastern, and central India.

IMD Warning for Saturday (13 June)

According to IMD satellite bulletins, a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal combined with cyclonic winds has accelerated monsoon activity. This could lead to dust storms with wind speeds of 45–55 km/h and heavy rainfall with thunder in several states.

States Under Heavy Rain and Storm Alert

North India: Delhi-NCR, western and eastern Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan

East India: Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal (including lightning warning)

Hilly Regions: Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh (landslide alert)

Central and South India: Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra's Konkan region, Kerala

IMD Satellite Insights

Radar and INSAT-3D satellite images indicate the monsoon trough currently passing over northern plains. IMD meteorologists predict that in Delhi-NCR and Uttar Pradesh, dense clouds will form post-noon due to the interaction of the Western Disturbance and monsoon winds, resulting in heavy storms and rainfall. Temperatures could drop by 4–5°C, providing temporary relief from oppressive heat.

Advice for Farmers

June is the main sowing season for Kharif crops like paddy, maize, and millet. Agricultural experts advise:

  • Sowing: Avoid waterlogging in fields before sowing paddy or preparing nurseries.
  • Pesticides: Delay pesticide spraying during storms as rain and wind may wash them away.
  • Livestock: Keep cattle and pets in safe shelters, away from trees or open fields due to lightning risk.

Public Guidelines for Weekend Travel

  • Check traffic updates: Storms may cause fallen trees and waterlogging, leading to jams.
  • Stay away from electrical poles: Avoid parking vehicles near loose wires or transformers during thunderstorms.
  • Monitor weather apps: Check live updates from IMD's official website or app before stepping out.
