Many people have a habit of putting vegetables, fruits or other food items directly in the fridge after bringing them home. Many people think that food will not survive without a refrigerator, especially in summer. But not every food can be treated in cold environment. Refrigerating some foods reduces their flavor, alters texture, and affects nutritional value. Often, in an attempt to preserve food for longer, we unknowingly cause it to spoil quickly. So it is very important to know which foods to keep in the fridge and which to avoid.

Avoid keeping these foods in the fridge

tomato

Tomatoes lose their natural flavor when kept at cold temperatures. Their heat becomes soft and the freshness of the food also decreases. Such tomatoes do not have the desired juiciness and taste when used for salad or vegetables.

Potatoes

The cold in the fridge converts the starch in the potato into sugar. This changes their taste and color after cooking. Due to this, potato dishes are not tasty.

onion and garlic

Onions and garlic absorb moisture from the fridge. Hence, besides softening it, the risk of mold growth increases. Their quality and freshness will last longer if kept in a ventilated place.

banana

If bananas are kept in the fridge, their skin will turn black quickly and slow down the natural ripening process.

Bread

Refrigerating bread dries it out and loses its softness. So it seems to get stale quickly. This causes the bread to harden and smell spoiled when making a sandwich or toast.

Honey and coffee

Honey can solidify in a cold environment, while coffee absorbs odors from other foods in the fridge, reducing its flavor and aroma.

Store this way

Although the refrigerator is useful for preserving food, it is not the right choice for every food. Don’t just rely on the fridge to keep food fresher for longer. The flavor, quality and nutritional value of each food item can be preserved for longer if stored according to its needs. So the next time you put something in the fridge, think about whether it really needs to be there.
