Group B’s opening fixture at the World Cup between Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina proved that even early group-stage encounters can produce moments of brilliance and drama.
Co-hosts Canada fell behind in the 21st minute after Jovo Lukic netted a sharp finish, assisted by former Arsenal defender Sead Kolasinac.
Despite conceding early, Canada responded with relentless attacking play, pushing forward in search of an equaliser. However, it was a moment of defensive genius from Kolasinac that left both fans and commentators stunned.
In the 53rd minute, Canada created another clear scoring opportunity that seemed destined to level the game. Left-back Richie Laryea slipped into the penalty area and curled a right-footed effort past the Bosnian goalkeeper, only to be denied by Kolasinac’s extraordinary intervention.
As the ball looked certain to cross the line, Kolasinac stretched out a foot to make contact, diverting it onto the crossbar and keeping Bosnia’s lead intact. The clearance was so remarkable that BBC commentator Jonathan Pearce described it as “as good as a goal.”
Moments later, Bosnia nearly doubled their advantage when Ermedin Demirovic broke through on goal, but his shot was saved by the Canadian goalkeeper, preserving the tension of the match. Had he scored, it would have capped a sequence destined to be remembered in World Cup history, following Kolasinac’s heroic save.
Canada eventually found their equaliser late in the game, thanks to two substitutes combining effectively. Promise David set up Cyle Larin, who fired a precise strike into the right side netting past Nikola Vasilj, bringing the sides level.
Not long after, Kolasinac went down injured and required medical attention. The Bosnian captain had to be helped off the pitch, handing over his armband. Despite his injury, his earlier defensive heroics and commanding performance ensured Bosnia secured a vital point in Group B.
Next up, Bosnia and Herzegovina will face Switzerland, with hopes that Kolasinac can recover quickly to continue leading his team towards the knockout stages. Meanwhile, Canada will take on Qatar as Jesse Marsch’s men aim for their first win of the World Cup campaign.
